We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own, Deputy Levi Vargas, who passed away while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.
Deputy Vargas was more to us than a dedicated deputy, he was a friend, he was a teammate, and a valued member of our family. He represented our Department with courage, commitment, and dedication to the community he served. His loss is deeply felt across our entire law enforcement family.
We offer our condolences to his wife, his parents, extended family, and partners. We mourn and pray for strength during this incredibly difficult time.
The Baker to Vegas race has long stood as a tradition of teamwork, endurance, and unity among law enforcement agencies. Deputy Vargas embodied those values.
I also want to recognize and congratulate all the teams who represented the Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department. I am proud of your commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
We are deeply grateful to the volunteers, families, friends, and sponsors who supported our runners. Your encouragement and generosity mean more than words can ever express, and you are an important part of this extended law enforcement family.
While we grieve this tremendous loss, we are reminded of the strength and unity that define our Department. We will honor and never forget Deputy Levi Vargas and his family.
God bless him and the men and women of the Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department.

On March 25, 2026, officers responded to the 700 block of Florida St for a report of armed individuals. Witnesses reported the suspects handling a firearm and hearing a gunshot before officers arrived. Officers located both subjects nearby and conducted a high-risk stop without incident.
Video evidence later showed one suspect firing a round into the air.
Officers recovered a loaded firearm with an extended magazine and a spent shell casing. Both suspects were arrested and booked. One suspect, an 18-year-old from American Canyon, was not legally permitted to possess the firearm. Report suspicious activity. Community information helps officers respond and hold offenders accountable.

βI am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.β
