Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa was tragically murdered during an attempted robbery in Long Beach in the early morning hours of March 28, 2006. While heading to work at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles, she was confronted by two suspects seeking to fund their drug habit. When Deputy Rosa identified herself by displaying her badge, a struggle ensued, and she was shot twice in the torso with a .22 caliber handgun. Her body was later discovered by newspaper delivery workers.
An intense manhunt was launched for Deputy Rosaβs killers. In late September 2006, they were arrested. A year-and-a-half later, after already convicting both men of Deputy Rosaβs murder, the jury issued a death sentenced to the man who shot her. The second suspect received 29-year to life in prison.
Deputy Rosa, 30, known affectionately as βCessyβ to her friends, was a native of Sonora, Mexico. She graduated from high school in Gilroy, CA and joined the Sheriff's Department in 2000. She was survived by three brothers and two sisters.
In 2009 a section of the 710 Freeway between Wardlow Road to the Pacific Coast Highway in the City of Long Beach was dedicated in her honor as the "Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Maria Cecilia Rosa Memorial Highway."

Warm weather doesn't mean safe water.
As temperatures rise, rivers and lakes fed by snowmelt stay dangerously cold, and cold water can trigger shock within seconds. Strong currents often run beneath calm-looking surfaces, making even familiar spots unpredictable.
CAL FIRE crews train for swift water rescues. But the best rescue is the one that never has to happen.
Before you get near the water:
𧑠Wear a life jacket
β Avoid fast-moving water
π Respect cold water conditions no matter the air temperature
