It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Sunia, a retired Oxnard Police Department Sergeant and dedicated Ventura County District Attorney Investigator. John passed away on March 19, 2026, surrounded by loving family and friends.

He faithfully served the Oxnard Police Department from 2003 to 2023, working as a narcotics detective, violent crimes investigator, and major crimes detective before retiring as a patrol sergeant. In 2023, he joined the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, where he was assigned to the Fentanyl Overdose Crimes Unit, contributing to efforts to reduce overdose deaths in the county.

Raised in Oxnard, John graduated from Channel Islands High School, where he excelled in baseball and football. His teamwork, discipline, and strong character defined his distinguished law enforcement career. He was widely respected for his warm personality and exceptional investigative skills.

NEW: Sacramento CA sheriff to announce measure targeting predators.

The Sacramento County Sheriff is set to announce Wednesday a new ballot initiative intended to prevent sexual predators from having their prison time cut short. Jim Cooper's initiative comes amid increased calls to change California's elderly parole program, which allows some violent criminals—including child rapists and murderers serving life sentences— to be released early. This program was established after the U.S. Supreme Court put California on notice in 2011 for its overcrowded prisons. Recently, serial child rapist David Allen Funston was released under this program, but Placer County officials immediately took him back into custody to face child molestation charges from 1996.

Texas: A Harris County Precinct 1 Constable deputy was rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning following a crash on the Eastex Freeway, authorities confirmed.

According to Pct. 1, the crash happened on the northbound lanes of IH-69 at Collingsworth. The crash involved the deputy and another vehicle.

It's unclear what led to the crash, but authorities said the deputy was hospitalized due to his injuries, which are not life-threatening. The condition of the other driver involved was not immediately known.
