PRESS RELEASE - Monterey County Sheriffโs Deputies and CHP Officers rescue suicidal male -
On February 21, 2026, at approximately 11:34 a.m., deputies with the Monterey County Sheriffโs Office responded to assist the California Highway Patrol (CHP) with a report of a suicidal individual on the San Miguel Canyon Road overpass above Highway 101. The individual was sitting on the railing of the bridge and threatening to jump.
For the safety of the public and first responders, southbound Highway 101 and associated off-ramps were temporarily closed. Personnel from Crisis Intervention Services, North County Fire District, and American Medical Response (AMR) also responded to the scene. North County Fire did not have rescue airbags available and attempts to locate an agency that could provide them were unsuccessful.
CHP Officers T. Duckworth and J. Simonian, along with Monterey County Sheriffโs Office Hostage Negotiator Deputy Osuna and Deputy Cosio, attempted to negotiate with the individual for approximately two hours. Despite their efforts, the individual remained on the railing. MCSO Sergeant Nottingham coordinated with Deputy Cosio to monitor for an opportunity to safely intervene.
When the individual repositioned himself as if preparing to jump and began looking down while praying, Deputy Cosio immediately took decisive action and grabbed him. Deputy Osuna and CHP Officers Duckworth and Simonian rushed in to assist, and together they safely pulled the individual back over the railing.
Sheriff Tina Nieto commended the deputies and CHP officers for their swift and courageous actions, noting they placed themselves at significant personal risk to save the life of a person in crisis.
Crisis Intervention staff subsequently placed the individual on a 5150 hold, and he was transported to Natividad Medical Center for evaluation and care.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SENTENCED TO THREE LIFE TERMS: WHY WAS SERIAL CHILD MOLESTER DAVID FUNSTON GRANTED EARLY RELEASE?
The people of Sacramento, and every parent across California, deserve answers.
The California Parole Board has granted parole to David Allen Funston, a serial child molester who used candy and toys to lure children seven years old and younger.
He was convicted of 16 counts of kidnapping and child molestation. Multiple young children were victimized, some as young as four years old. He was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, along with three additional consecutive sentences of 25 years to life. A judge described him as โthe monster parents fear the most.โ
Yet today, the parole board has determined he is suitable for release. How do they explain that to those children and their parents? How do they tell families that a predator of this nature is โno longer a riskโ?
Under Californiaโs Elderly Parole Program, inmates over 50 are eligible for parole. He is 64. Age does not erase predatory behavior. It does not undo grooming. It does not restore stolen childhoods. Childhood sexual predators do not suddenly become safe because they turned 50; they cannot be rehabilitated.
Most states exclude heinous crimes like this from elderly parole. California does not.
Today, a survivor bravely spoke about what this decision means. Detective Rodriguez, who worked this case, knows firsthand what this man was capable of and how he was caught.
The Elderly Parole Program was meant for those who no longer pose a danger. In cases like this, it fails. Our number one responsibility is to protect children. That should never be controversial or partisan.
Protecting children is not rhetoric. It is common sense. Protect children first. Always.
