We Remember and Honor Deputy Sheriff Daniel A. Todd, End of Watch (EOW) February 22, 1910, Gunfire

In January 1910, J.D. and Dollie De Turk, a well-to-do couple who owned the county dump and incinerator in Vernon, began receiving threatening letters demanding money ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. The letters promised harm to Dollie’s son and J.D. De Turk’s step-son, Edward S. Keyes if the demands were not met. Initially, Sheriff William Hammel suspected that the Black Hand, a forerunner of the Mafia, was behind the threats. In response to this possibility, he swore in Daniel Todd as a special deputy sheriff and assigned Todd to watch over the De Turk family and their property and investigate the matter.

On February 22, 1910, young Edward Keyes threatened his mother with a gun and demanded money from her. Dollie De Turk called Deputy Todd for assistance. Todd had befriended the boy and she thought his rapport with her son would help. What happened next is in dispute. A struggle appears to have ensued between Todd and Keyes over the weapon. The firearm discharged and a bullet penetrated Todd’s heart killing him.

Given Keyes's demand for money from his mother and Todd’s inability to tie the Black Hand to the extortion threats, some newspapers conjectured that Keyes wrote the threatening letters himself. Armed with these suspicions and given the circumstances of Deputy Todd’s death, Sheriff Hammel held Keyes in County Jail pending the Coroner’s inquest and a review by the District Attorney.

Keyes, his mother, and step-father were the only witnesses to the shooting at both the Coroner’s inquest and preliminary hearing. They supported each other’s accounts of the incident. Given this, both the Coroner’s inquest jury and judge in the preliminary hearing ruled Todd’s death an accident, and Keyes was set free.
Daniel Todd, 46, was a native of Ireland and a widower.

🐾Today we said goodbye to K-9 Brix🐾

Brix faithfully served the citizens of Kanawha County before retiring on September 1, 2023. He was 13 years old at the time of his passing this morning. For years, he worked the road, stood beside his partner, Sgt. Mike Dickerson, on difficult calls, and did his job with unmatched loyalty.

After retirement, he stayed right where he belonged, with Sgt. Dickerson, who now serves as a School Resource Officer for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Offie. Their bond never changed. It never does.

Brix wasn’t just a K-9. He was family.

The CJNG are also responsible for exploiting and sexually abusing migrant women and children while facilitating their illicit trafficking into the United States.

This includes luring pregnant migrant women, killing them by performing illegal C-sections, and then selling their infants to US couples, per the Justice Department.
