The community is rallying around an Orleans Parish sheriff's deputy injured in a motorcycle accident while performing a police escort in the line of duty.

Deputy Bennie Collura was performing a motorcycle escort while on duty on Feb. 5 when he was involved in an accident that left him severely injured.

"He's going to be off his feet for the next few months," said Sgt. Jamil Champagne, with OPSO. "Unfortunately, the type of injury he has, he's going to be bedridden for a while. So he needs all of our prayers and support."

It unfolded the same day as the funeral for Jefferson Parish Deputy Chris Ohlmeyer, who was killed after being hit on his motorcycle while working a funeral procession.

Both accidents are a stark reminder of the dangers on the road.

"Know that we share the road with motorists, with bicycle people and just to slow down and make sure that you're safe," said Champagne.

Collura has been with the OPSO for roughly 15 years, working as a detective, motorcycle sergeant and K9 officer.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the Line of Duty Death of Retired Fire Captain William “Luto” Lutostanski Jr. on February 17, 2026, following a courageous, three-year battle with work-related cancer.

“Luto” proudly served the Baltimore County Fire Department for 26 years, dedicating his life to protecting the residents of Baltimore County. Hired on February 15, 1999 as an EMT/Firefighter in the 78th Recruit Class, he rose through the suppression ranks with honor and distinction serving as Fire Specialist, Fire Lieutenant, and ultimately Fire Captain. He retired on February 5, 2026, concluding more than two decades of exemplary public service.

Throughout his career, “Luto” served in multiple operational assignments across the County, including long tenures at Truck 8 in Fullerton, Engine 2 in Pikesville, Engine 16, and Engine 3 in Woodlawn, where he finished his career. His leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the job left a lasting impact on every company he served and every firefighter who had the privilege to work alongside him.

Captain Lutostanski’s courage was exemplified on January 19, 2011, during a second-floor apartment fire. Amid heavy smoke and rapidly deteriorating conditions, he and fellow firefighters located an unconscious civilian and began her removal. When the room flashed over, Captain Lutostanski shielded the victim with his own body, laying over her as fire rolled overhead - placing her life above his own. This act of selfless heroism reflects exactly who he was as a firefighter and as a man.

Beyond the job, “Luto” was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He is loved by more than he knew, and his legacy will endure in the lives he saved, the firefighters he mentored, and the standard of service he embodied.

Today, we remember Officer Ricardo Lizarraga, who was killed on February 20, 2004 while investigating a domestic disturbance in the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles.

He and his partner were flagged down by a woman while on patrol. The woman informed the two officers she was having problems with a friend and wanted him removed from her home. As the officers approached the man to search him, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer Lizarraga in the abdomen, below his vest. Officer Lizarraga’s partner returned fire as the suspect fled the scene.

Officer Lizarraga was transported to a local hospital where he died from his wounds approximately 2 hours later. The suspect was arrested about 3 hours after the shooting during a large manhunt.

Officer Lizarraga joined the LAPD on September 25, 2001 and graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy in April 2002. He worked patrol assignments in the 77th Street Area and one year later transferred to the Newton Area. He chose Newton because there he could use his fluent Spanish in the community. He felt it was a great privilege to be working a Z-Car Unit.

Officer Lizarraga had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 2.5 years. He is survived by his wife, parents, brother, and two sisters.

A Washington State Patrol trooper suffered minor injuries after a suspected drunken driver struck a patrol car at a crash scene along Interstate 5 (I-5) Saturday morning in Tacoma, authorities said.

Troopers were investigating a collision on southbound I-5 near South 72nd Street at around 1 a.m. when a sedan drove through the scene and hit a patrol vehicle, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The trooper was outside of the patrol car when it was struck and sustained minor injuries, according to WSP.
After the collision, the trooper was able to pursue the fleeing vehicle, stop it, and arrest the driver, authorities said.
Investigators said the suspect vehicle had been traveling along the right shoulder as if it were a regular lane before driving through the crash scene.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run, according to WSP.

Homicide Investigation (February 21, 2026) – Santa Ana Police Detectives are investigating a shooting that killed one and injured another.

On Friday, February 20, 2026, at approximately 8:57 p.m., Santa Ana Police Department officers responded to a report of a male who had just been shot in the area of 1200 E. Borchard Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) personnel responded and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

At approximately 9:01 p.m., officers responded to reports of a male in the roadway at 700 E. Elder Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. OCFA responded and pronounced the victim, later identified as David Nicholas Bravo Martinez (22) of Santa Ana, deceased at the scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it was determined that both incidents were connected and appear to be gang-related. The victims were driving in the area of 700 E. Elder Ave. when they were shot. The surviving victim then drove the vehicle to 1200 E. Borchard Ave., where he called police to report that he and his friend had been shot. Martinez was later located at the original shooting location.

Homicide Detectives are attempting to identify and locate additional witnesses who can provide information about the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call SAPD Homicide Section Detectives at (714) 245-8390, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
