NEW: A massive manhunt is underway in Meridian, Idaho, after a suspect stole an ambulance and rammed it into a medical building housing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offices late Wednesday night, February 18, 2026. Authorities are describing the incident as a calculated and violent criminal act targeted at federal agents.
The Attack Timeline π‘οΈβοΈ
Around 11:10 p.m., a suspect stole a Canyon County Paramedics ambulance from the bay at St. Lukeβs Meridian Medical Center.
The suspect drove the vehicle to a nearby area to retrieve gasoline cans that had been hidden in vegetation earlier.
The suspect rammed the ambulance directly into the North Portico building, shattering the glass entrance.
Investigators believe the suspect poured an accelerant inside and around the ambulance but was scared off by responding agencies before they could ignite the fire.
"Property Damage IS Violence" πποΈ
Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea issued a stern rebuke to social media rhetoric suggesting the attack was non-violent:
βComments on social media such as βproperty damage isn't violenceβ is absolutely false. This was absolutely an act of violenceβ.
The Chief emphasized that if the suspect hadn't been interrupted, the building would have burned, putting the lives of first responders and other tenantsβincluding a hospice and a health insurance companyβat extreme risk.
St. Lukeβs has recently faced intense criticism for leasing office space to the DHS as the administration carries out a national immigration enforcement crackdown.
The Ongoing Investigation πποΈ
As of Thursday afternoon, the suspect has not been apprehended.
The investigation is a massive joint effort between the Meridian Police, Ada County Sheriff, FBI, DHS, and Idaho State Police.
Beyond the attack, officials noted the loss of the ambulance temporarily removed a critical medical resource from the Treasure Valley.
