The Downey Police Department sadly announced the death of one of former police officers.
"Officer Llamas was hired with the Downey Police Department in 2006 and served the City of Downey until April 2017. Officer Llamas passed away after a long battle with terminal brain cancer. We honor his service to our community and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends."

Chief James T. Smith passed away at 66 years old on January 22, 2026. A dedicated leader in law enforcement, he served with honor for more than 35 years, beginning with the Kentucky State Police , advancing through ranks to Major and Special Operations Division Commander with the Jefferson County Police Department (later Louisville Metro Police Department ), and serving as Chief of Police for the Lawton Police Department in Oklahoma since 2012.
He was selected for the chief position after a nationwide search and focused on community partnerships, officer wellness, and trust-building while advancing plans for a new Public Safety Facility. He passed away in Lawton, Oklahoma; he was laid to rest following funeral services on January 28, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Lawton, Oklahoma, under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
Described as "more than a law enforcement leader" a "mentor, a protector, and a steady presence" whose "legacy of service, integrity, and commitment will endure" James embodied profound character and unwavering dedication to public safety, community, and those he led.

BREAKING: Multiple people were shot in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Wednesday evening during a shooting near the 60th Street corridor on the cityβs east side, prompting a large police and emergency response and the establishment of a perimeter spanning several blocks.
Radio traffic indicates officers and medics were dispatched to the area of 60th Street and 6th Avenue after callers reported gunshots. Responding officers quickly determined there were multiple victims. At least one victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was reported unconscious, with lifesaving measures including CPR underway at the scene. Additional victims were reported to have gunshot wounds to the arm and face.
Authorities expanded the response area as additional victims were located nearby, including one in the vicinity of 7th Avenue and 60th Street near Library Park. Several ambulance crews and fire units were called to assist with the injured.
Police also broadcast information about a possible suspect described as a white male named βAaron,β though no last name or confirmation of involvement has been released. Officers also reported seeing a white SUV leaving the area northbound on 6th Avenue shortly after the shooting, but investigators have not confirmed whether that vehicle was involved.
Officers shut down portions of nearby roadways and established a perimeter while medical crews treated victims and investigators worked to secure the scene.
The number of people struck by gunfire and their conditions have not been officially confirmed by authorities. No arrests have been announced as of publication time.

We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of retired FPD Sgt. Gary Yamamoto.
Gary served with the Fairbanks Police Department, Alaska for 24 years, beginning in April 1993 and retiring in January 2017.
During his tenure, Gary was a leading member of the Traffic Unit and a top DUI enforcement officer, contributing significantly to roadway safety in Fairbanks. He served for many years as a Datamaster Supervisor and trained officers from FPD and other agencies in DUI investigations. Gary also supervised the traffic accident investigation team for years, providing expertise in collision scene measurements that supported local, state, and federal investigations.
In addition to his traffic enforcement work, Gary coordinated the Field Training Officer program and mentored numerous officers throughout his career.
His efforts earned him multiple state and local awards for traffic safety and investigations.
Gary was a loved supervisor and his contributions to law enforcement and public safety will be remembered. We extend our deepest condolences to Garyβs wife, Patty, their children, and all who called him a friend.
