From RPD: “Update with press release provided at 7:32 P.M.: RENO, Nev. – On Feb. 3, 2026, at approximately 4 p.m., officers from the Reno Police Department (RPD) responded to the Wells Avenue Bridge on a report of a welfare check. Officers contacted the suspect and were in communication with him for several minutes, before an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. A Reno police officer was also injured during the incident. The officer was treated at the hospital and is in stable condition. 

This remains an active investigation. The public is asked to continue avoiding Wells Avenue between 6th Street and 2nd Street. An update will be provided on RPD’s X account once the scene is clear. 

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is leading the officer involved shooting investigation and will provide further details as they become available. “

Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison plus seven years for his 2024 assassination attempt against Donald Trump at a Florida golf club. Routh was found guilty on five federal charges, including attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate and firearm offenses. Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, while his attorney asked for 20 years. The trial revealed that Routh aimed a rifle at Trump but was intercepted by a Secret Service agent before firing a shot.
