Clay County Sheriff's Office, Florida deputies were injured while responding to a call and being attacked by multiple dogs. One deputy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
"On January 22, 2026, at approximately 6:15 P.M., deputies were called to the 300-block of Foxtail Avenue in Middleburg for reports of a verbal disturbance and hearing gunshots. When deputies arrived in the area, they heard a woman yelling from inside a recreational vehicle on the property. Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies were met by the woman and three large breed dogs. Deputy Riley was attacked by one of the aggressive dogs, sustaining serious injuries. Fearing for his life and while attempting to escape further injury, Deputy Riley discharged his service weapon striking and killing the dog.
The woman, identified as Vichelle Rigney, charged at deputies while making verbal threats, preventing Deputy Riley from receiving medical aid. Deputies Megowan and Engelthaler took Rigney into custody while attempting to shield Deputy Riley from the remaining aggressive dogs. While arresting Rigney, Deputy Engelthaler and Rigney were both bitten by one of the aggressive dogs sustaining minor injuries. Deputy Engelthaler deployed his taser at the animal causing it to run from the immediate area. Vichelle Rigney was arrested for Resisting Law Enforcement Without Violence.
Deputy Riley was transported by Clay County Fire Rescue to a local hospital for treatment of significant injuries. He was admitted for further medical care. Deputy Engelthaler was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and was released. Rigney was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for a dog bite injury prior to being booked into the Clay County Jail.
Clay County Animal Services (CCAS) responded to the scene and collected the deceased dog for further testing. The remaining two dogs have been located and sheltered with family members who are cooperating with Clay County Animal Services.
This investigation remains active and we appreciate all the support from the community for our deputies."

THIS is how countless dogs are currently "living" like in Los Angeles. This is one dog we rescued 2 years ago. Nothing has changed on how dogs are treated or protected in Los Angeles. The homeless person on this street said if we don't take her, he will "shoot her in the head".

Today, CSPD K9 Roam has officially entered medical retirement.
After being gravely injured in the line of duty during a call for service in October 2025, Roam fought through unimaginable odds. Despite the loss of a rear leg and nearly losing his life, he made an extraordinary recovery, an inspiring testament to his strength and spirit.
While Roam will be deeply missed as a working K9, his story is far from over. He will continue to make a positive impact in the community and will now live at home with his handler and his family. There, heβll enjoy a well-earned retirement, while still serving as a special ambassador for CSPD from time to time.
