News Release - CPD Officer Injured After Being Dragged by a Suspect During a Traffic Stop
(Conyers, GA β January 1, 2026): Yesterday afternoon, around 4:17 p.m., a CPD Traffic Unit officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had a brake light not functioning and a tinted tag cover. During the traffic stop investigation, the officer suspected the driver was under the influence and was attempting to further the investigation, but the driver, William Cornelius (55, Covington), became non-compliant and started physically resisting. The officer deployed his taser, but Cornelius continued to resist.
Cornelius made his way back to the driverβs seat of his vehicle, and the officer attempted to remove him from the vehicle. While the officer was attempting to remove Cornelius from the vehicle, Cornelius placed the vehicle in drive, ultimately dragging the officer 35-40 feet until he was able to let go of the vehicle.
A description of Corneliusβs vehicle was aired, and with the use of our Flock license plate readers, officers located the vehicle near West Avenue and I-20. Officers pursued Cornelius for a short distance onto I-20 westbound near West Avenue until a precision immobilization technique (PIT) was used to disable Corneliusβs vehicle. Cornelius was taken into custody without further incident.
The CPD officer was transported to a hospital for the injuries he sustained during the incident. He is now at home resting and recovering.
Cornelius is currently at a local area hospital being treated for non-life-threatening injuries he sustained from the PIT. He is being charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Fleeing and Eluding, Obstruction, and several traffic-related offenses.

Newsreel footage from January 1, 1946, when hundreds of thousands of Angelenos gathered to watch what was then the first Tournament of Roses in five years.
The parade had been canceled for safety in 1942, just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and then they decided not to hold them during the war due in part to material restrictions. So with the nation on the heels of victory in January 1946, people were so eager to get back to normal that an estimated 320,000 people were already in place to see the parade at 7:30 that morning, per police, with thousands more expected to come. Overall, including the Rose Bowl game and other local events and shopping deals, officials estimated that two million people visited Pasadena that day.
