BREAKING: Evacuation orders issued in the Castaic area after a gas line explosion near the 5 Freeway.

A gas explosion in Castaic was reported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station a little after 4 p.m. Saturday.

"Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies and the Los Angeles County Fire Department are responding to a possible gas line explosion near Ridge Route Road in Castaic.

Traffic & Area Impacts:

- Avoid the area of I-5 Freeway and Ridge Route Road, north of Castaic

- I-5 northbound is shut down from SR-126 to Templin Highway

Residents in affected areas have been advised to Shelter in Place.

Please continue to monitor official updates and avoid the area until further notice."

A U.S. Park Police officer was injured early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic-related investigation on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

At approximately 3:20 am a United States Park Police Officer had conducted a traffic stop on I-295 Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

During the course of this, the officer was struck by a vehicle. The Park Police's "Eagle One" medevac helicopter arrived quickly to transport the officer to a hospital. The officer’s condition is serious but not life threatening at this time.

POLICE OFFICER INJURED IN CRASH: Investigators are on thescene of a two-vehicle crash involving a police officer in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

The crash was reported at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday on New Shackle Island Road near Old Drakes Creek Road. As of 8:45 a.m. Saturday, a stretch of road near the intersection remained closed.

Sumner County Mayor John Isbell confirmed the crash involved a Hendersonville police officer, who is reportedly in stable condition at Skyline Medical Center.

Miami-Dade deputy in critical condition after Turnpike crash in Doral: ‘We need your prayers’

Florida: A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured Saturday morning in a crash on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike between Northwest 41st and 58th streets, authorities confirmed.

MDSO Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said the deputy, who has been in law enforcement for 20 years and with MDSO for six, was on duty en route to work when he responded to a traffic-related call to help a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol that involved an entrapment at around 7 a.m.
He said the crash involved a sedan, whose driver remained at the scene.

HOSPITAL SECURITY OFFICER DIES AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY ASSAULT IN MINNESOTA

Andrea Merrell, a 43-year-old hospital security officer from North Branch, has died after being violently assaulted while on duty at M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming.

According to investigators, the incident began when a patient who had been placed on a medical hold ran from the emergency department. Hospital staff attempted to intervene, and during that effort, Andrea was allegedly assaulted by the patient.

By the time police arrived, Andrea had already been seriously injured. The suspect was located outside the hospital and taken into custody after resisting officers during a prolonged physical encounter. Law enforcement has emphasized that officers did not cause Andrea’s injuries, which occurred before police arrived on scene.

Andrea was transported to another hospital for treatment, but later died from her injuries.

The suspect, Jonathan Winch, a 35-year-old man from Chisago City, is currently being held as the case is reviewed by prosecutors. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting as multiple agencies continue to work through the investigation.

Andrea showed up to protect patients and staff at an emergency department on Christmas Day, and she lost her life. Hospital security officers often step into volatile situations with little recognition, and this loss is a devastating reminder of the risks they face.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office shared surveillance video from inside the county jail in Flint showing inmates gathering together inside a housing pod for a Christmas prayer.

In the video, inmates form a circle, hold hands, and recited the Lord’s Prayer. The sheriff said the moment happened without any direction from jail staff.

“I’ve NEVER posted a jail surveillance video like this one.”

Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson described the moment as an example of positive culture change inside the jail and credited staff for helping create an environment where moments like this can occur.

Chief Haverdink was struck around 6 p.m. December 23, on M-40 near 136th Avenue. He was taken by ambulance to University of Michigan Health-West in Wyoming in critical condition. He died on December 25, 2025 from the injuries he sustained. Chief Haverdink had served with Hamilton Fire Department for 51 years, over 40 years as chief. He had also been the sheriff of Allegan County for eight years.

Connecticut: A Naugatuck police officer was injured in a car crash on Friday as a winter storm dumped several inches of snow on parts of the state.

According to the Naugatuck Police Department, the crash occurred around 7 p.m. Police did not say where the crash happened or what led up to it.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

RESCUE MISSION: Police save a person trapped in a burning car after a rollover crash on an Illinois interstate.

The person who was rescued sustained minor injuries, as did two of the officers, officials said.

“These officers acted without hesitation, placing themselves in harm’s way. There is no doubt that their actions saved this individual’s life," said Police Chief Brian Strockis.
