Nine Officers Fired Thirty-Three Shots at an Armed Suspect Yet One of the Officers was Denied Qualified Immunity β Why?
Chief Shughes offers his expert analysis on this deadly shooting.
Eastep v. Nashville reinforces that when an individual presents a deadly weapon, advances toward officers, refuses commands, officers may reasonably use deadly force under the Fourth Amendment. However, once the threat endsβwhen a suspect is incapacitated, on the ground, no longer armedβany further use of deadly force may be unconstitutional.

The Ventura County Sheriffβs Office is proud to highlight the Reyes family this Thanksgiving. π¦
Picture on the LEFT - Sgt. Eduardo Reyes Sr. joined the Sheriffβs Office in 1986 and spent 35 years serving in some of our most demanding assignments from SWAT to Major Crimes.
Picture on the RIGHT - His daughter Esperanza carries his passion forward. After 13 years in Custody, Patrol, and now as a Station Detective, she continues to mentor new deputies and give back to her community.
Law enforcement has always been part of their family story and weβre grateful itβs part of ours, too. While other families watched movies on Saturday nights, they watched Cops and Americaβs Most Wanted together.
With a dad who truly loved his work, Esperanza grew up knowing exactly where she belonged.

79 drug dealers arrested last week as part of an apparent deal the mayor of San Francisco Daniel Lurie made with Trump to keep the National Guard out of the city. Brilliant move. Now, will our judges release them all to diversion? Probably. We need new judges.

On November 18th, SPD officers responded to a call in Del Paso Heights regarding three individuals reportedly armed with guns. During the initial contact, officers discovered that two of the juveniles were carrying imitation firearms, and one juvenile had an outstanding felony warrant.
During a search of the third adult individual's backpack, officers located a revolver. The adult suspect fled on foot from officers into the neighborhood. A K9 officer later observed the suspect running through a residential backyard and a K9 was deployed, safely apprehending the suspect. 20-year old Dairous Oliver of Carmichael was arrested for weapons-related charges.
