November is National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month!

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a dangerous and highly toxic gas that you cannot smell, taste or see. It is produced when carbon-based fuels are burned without enough oxygen, causing incomplete combustion. Carbon monoxide can build up in a home or other structure when gas appliances are not working properly or when combustion gases are not being safely vented to the outside.

Carbon monoxide in the air rapidly enters all parts of the body when you breathe. The carbon monoxide starves the body of oxygen causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Severe cases of carbon monoxide poisoning can be deadly (1,200+ deaths annually in the US).

Symptoms of carbon monoxide:
•Sudden flu-like symptoms
•Nausea and vomiting
•Headaches, shortness of breath, fatigue
•Dizziness, lightheadedness, mental confusion, drowsiness
•Blurred vision
•Chest pain, rapid or fluttering heartbeat
•Unconsciousness

If you believe carbon monoxide may be present in your home or office:
•If it is safe to do so, immediately turn off the suspected gas appliance and open windows to ventilate the area.
•Evacuate the building and do not let anyone back in until safe to do so.
•Call 911 and seek immediate medical attention if anyone experiences any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
•Contact SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or a qualified professional immediately to have the appliance inspected.
•Do not use the suspected appliance until it's been inspected, serviced and determined to be safe.

How to prevent carbon monoxide:
•Have your appliances and their ventilation checked every year.
•Ensure a carbon monoxide alarm is placed near each fuel-burning appliance.
•Look for signs of a carbon monoxide leak (soot or black residue on appliances or above a fireplace).
•Replace carbon monoxide alarms approximately every 5-7 years (or per manufacturer recommendations).
•Use generators at least 20 feet away from any buildings.
•Turn your car off in the garage, never leave the engine running.
•Do not use outdoor appliances inside or near open windows (grill, gas lantern, etc.).
•Stay upwind of any carbon monoxide sources outside.

👏 Lifesaving Heroes in Blue 👏

College Station Police Officers Leon and Nickelson were recently honored with the Lifesaving Award after their quick action during a serious 4-vehicle crash in Grimes County back in May.

While off duty, the officers stopped on Highway 105 to help — and rescued a driver trapped in a sedan that was about to catch fire. Their teamwork and courage saved a life that day.

Chief Couch presented both officers with the department’s Lifesaving Award, recognizing their bravery and selflessness even when they weren’t on duty.

BREAKING! FDNY CHIEF RESIGNS: A day after Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced that he will step down next month.

DEVELOPING: All residents of Yazoo City are being asked to shelter in place after an explosion at an ammonia plant in the county.

The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday at C.F. Industries on U.S. 49 East.

Nearby residents and businesses, including Walmart, have been instructed to evacuate.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is also urging residents in the Renshaw and Generette Road areas to leave their homes while crews deal with the incident.

Emergency personnel are on scene responding to an explosion at the CF Chemical Plant on US 49 East, north of the US 49 East–West Split in Yazoo County. The area is currently closed to traffic.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol and other local agencies are on site assisting with traffic control. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes until it is confirmed safe to travel.
