The FBI is investigating this morningβs agent-involved-shooting that occurred near the 400 block of East 20th Street in downtown Los Angeles. An FBI Evidence Response Team is currently processing the scene. The FBI is working with our federal partnersβ¦
Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a 44-year-old illegal alien from Mexico living in South Los Angeles, is now charged in a criminal complaint with assault on a federal officer. He is expected to make his initial appearance tomorrow at the Roybal Federal Building in downtown L.A. and would face up to eight years in federal prison if convicted.
This morning, Parias rammed his car into agentsβ vehicles after they boxed him in and ordered him to submit to arrest. Parias, who had previously avoided capture by immigration authorities, refused to comply with agentsβ orders and escalated what could have been a simple arrest into a life-threatening situation.
Parias rammed a Toyota Camry into the law enforcement vehicles in front of and behind him, spun the Camryβs tires, spewing smoke and debris into the air, causing the car to fishtail and causing agents to worry for their safety. An agent breaking the Camryβs driverβs side window was not enough to subdue Parias.
Ultimately, an agent opened fire, wounding Parias and a deputy U.S. marshal, who was hit with a ricochet bullet. Fortunately, both the deputy marshal and Parias are expected to recover. Parias was arrested. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Vehicles are deadly weapons. Anyone who uses them against federal agents risks arrest, imprisonment, and life-threatening injuries. We will continue to use every tool in our legal arsenal to protect our agents and enforce immigration laws passed by Congress.

NEW: Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has suspended Towns County Sheriff Kenneth Henderson for 60 days effective immediately.
The governor signed the suspension order Tuesday, stating the move is effective immediately. It comes after a committee made up of Attorney General Chris Carr, Coweta County Sheriff Lem Wood and Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown advised that Henderson be removed under the Georgia Code.
State officials have not said what specific misconduct led to the suspension or whether the findings relate solely to the December altercation involving Hiawassee Officer JosΓ© Carvajal.

NEW: DHS identifies the driver of a semi-truck who swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed head on into a Subaru in Indiana last week, killing a man, as a Serbian illegal alien without a commercial driver's license who has been a visa overstay since February 2011. Borko Stankovic is now charged with reckless homicide and criminal recklessness after he allegedly killed Jeffrey Eberly in the crash.
Previously, Stankovic was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department in Long Island, New York, for resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. DHS says he was protected by sanctuary polices during that prior arrest.
ICE has placed a detainer request on Stankovic with the Porter County detention center in Indiana.
DHS/Tricia McLaughlin statement:
βThis senseless tragedy should NEVER have happened, and this man should still be alive today. Stankovic has been in this country ILLEGALLY since 2011 and has a history of violating the law, yet he remained free to continue engaging in dangerous behavior that ultimately resulted in the death of Jeffrey Eberly. Illegal aliens have no business operating 18 wheelers or semi-trucks on Americaβs highways."
