Sad news out of La Mesa. La Mesa PD, California has confirmed 25-year-old Officer Lauren Craven was one of the two victims killed in a multi-car crash Monday night.
"It is with deep sorrow that we share the tragic loss of La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven, who was killed in the line of duty late Monday night. Officer Craven was returning to the city of La Mesa from San Diego Central Jail when she came upon a collision on eastbound Interstate 8 at Fairmont Avenue. After exiting her vehicle to assist, she was tragically struck and killed by another motorist.
Officer Craven’s actions in her final moments exemplified her unwavering dedication to service and the safety of others—a reflection of how she lived every day. Officer Craven was known for her tenacity, courage, and compassion—qualities that inspired her peers and strengthened her community. This weekend, following the large evacuation of survivors from the West Coast Storm, rescue teams were able to begin bringing pets to safety.
Among the animals rescued was the Kwigillingok School’s beloved pet -- a red-eared slider turtle who made the journey in a cardboard travel box with air holes. Possibly the first turtle ever to be escorted in a Black Hawk, she was aptly named “Fly Girl” by the team.
The photos you see here were taken by operations teams in the field as part of this coordinated animal rescue effort, supported by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s State Veterinarian and our mass care partners.
We are deeply grateful to everyone helping our four-legged (and shelled!) friends.
