On his final day on patrol, CHP - Merced Officer Rich Kennell shared the road with someone very special — his daughter, Officer Vierra.

It was a moment he had dreamed of: one more day enforcing the law, serving the community, and answering calls side by side with family.

Officer Vierra, who graduated from the CHP Academy in November 2024 and now serves proudly at CHP Hayward, joined her father for a full shift in Merced. Together they made stops, helped stranded drivers, and even got a crash course in cattle handling at Bob Erickson’s ranch.

Throughout the day, Officer Kennell wasn’t just a mentor — he was a proud dad, watching his daughter follow in his footsteps. And while he tried to recruit her to Merced, it was clear that no matter where they serve, the CHP bond runs deep.

The Emigrant Fire outside Oakridge, Oregon saw a whirlwind of ever changing conditions over the last 48 hours. Crews went from chasing spot fires to driving through sleet and snow.

Lines are in place and 1/3+ of the fire’s edge has yet to burn down to those control lines. The nearly 32,000 acre fire will be slowed by the weather that has come in, but at 0% containment, there is still a lot of work to do. Crews continue with snag removal, lining spot fires, and catching new starts from lightning in the area.
