UPDATE: Juvenile Identified After Brandishing Air Gun in Lowell, Prompting Large Police Response

A juvenile male has been identified as the individual reported to be brandishing a firearm yesterday in Lowell that prompted a large police response. The firearm, which is confirmed to be an airsoft replica weapon, has been recovered.

On September 3, 2025, just before 2:30 PM, the Lowell Police Department received a report of an individual possibly armed with a firearm. Patrol officers immediately responded and began to search the area. The Lowell Police Department Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) was deployed as well as the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing. Numerous Police K9s, Massachusetts State Police Troopers, the NEMLEC Swat Team, UMass Lowell Police, LNHP Law Enforcement Rangers, the FBI, and ATF also responded to assist.

Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident while patrol officers continued securing the area throughout the night.

Hot, dry, and windy conditions along with lightning strikes have sparked the TCU September Lightning Complex Fire, and CAL FIRE crews are fully engaged in the response. The fire has burned 13,790 acres and is 15% contained.

Engines, dozers, hand crews, helicopters, and airtankers are all working together to slow the fire, reinforce containment lines, and protect communities in the area. CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 6 is coordinating this large-scale response.

A Damage Assessment Team is in place and are actively inspecting structures. These assessments are ongoing, and verified updates will continue to be shared with the public.

Crews are making steady progress but are also being methodical in checking for hidden “holdover” fires—smoldering spots from lightning strikes that can sometimes take days to appear. Extinguishing these holdovers is key to maintaining long-term containment and community safety.

This remains a dynamic fire, with resources working around the clock until full containment is achieved. Residents in affected areas should stay alert, follow official instructions, and be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
