NEW: South Congaree Police Chief Steve Jonas and three others were hospitalized after a head-on collision Wednesday in Columbia, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The chief of police of a Midlands law enforcement agency was among four people hospitalized following a Wednesday night crash in Richland County, South Carolina officials said.

South Congaree Police Chief Steve Jonas was involved in a two-vehicle collision, spokeswoman Ashley Hunter said in a news release.

The crash happened at about 6:15 p.m. on South Beltline Boulevard in Columbia, Capt. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday.

Jonas and three people in the SUV were taken to an area hospital, according to Collins.

DEVELOPING: Two Boone County deputies have reportedly been shot in Walton, Kentucky.

About 100 police cars from all different counties just flew by with lights and sirens towards Walton.

This morning, a motorist pulled into CAL FIRE TCU’s Copperopolis Station after hearing faint cries from her vehicle. What she thought might be a mechanical problem turned out to be something entirely different as they heard tiny meows coming from her engine.
 
Firefighters immediately went to work, carefully searching the engine compartment until they found three kittens tucked into hidden spaces beneath the hood. One by one, the crew freed the frightened but unharmed animals, handing them safely to the driver.
 
Now safe and sound, the kittens have a forever home with the driver. In the sweetest tribute, she plans to name each kitten after the firefighters who saved them—an honor these heroes never expected but will never forget.

Two deputies were shot while serving an arrest warrant in Walton Thursday night, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputies were taken to UC Medical Center where officials said they are in stable condition.
