NEW: A federal immigration officer was attacked and injured while trying to take a man into custody in Florida, according to local authorities.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the incident unfolded Tuesday morning in Lakeland.

Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers had followed Denis Corea Miranda, 21, because he had a warrant for deportation, according to the sheriff’s office.

The ICE officers chased after Miranda but said they lost him in the woods. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was then called to assist, launching a helicopter, drones and sending out K-9 teams.

The ICE officer who got into a fight with Miranda was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for a shoulder injury and is expected to recover.

The FBI is investigating this shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and hate crime targeting Catholics.

There were 2 fatalities, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old. In addition, 14 children and 3 adults were injured.

The shooter has been identified as Robin Westman, a male born as Robert Westman.

The FBI will continue to provide updates on our ongoing investigation with the public as we are able.

JUST IN: A Maryland man who intentionally hit Montgomery County Police Sgt. Patrick Kepp at 100+ MPH was given a maximum sentence of 22 years and 60 days this afternoon.

In October 2023, 19-year-old Raphael Mayorga struck the sergeant, who was setting up spike strips outside of his cruiser on I-270.

Sergeant Kepp was listed in critical condition for several days & lost both legs as a result. Additionally, he needed 10 surgeries in eight months following the crash. He has miraculously since returned to work with the Montgomery County Police Department.

In his victim impact statement, Kepp told the judge that Mayorga will eventually get out of jail, but Kepp “is serving a life sentence,” because of his injuries.

A police officer, riding a motorcycle, was seriously injured and is being transported to a hospital in critical condition.

NEW: ICE Los Angeles HSI Integrated Operations Group arrested Juan Lopez-Vasquez, 40, of Mexico, Aug. 27. Lopez has been charged with DUIs, hit and run resulting in property damage, and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse. He is in ICE custody pending removal.

UPDATE: Three Chicago police officers and two suspects were hospitalized Wednesday morning after officers intervened in an attempted burglary in a freight train yard in Englewood, authorities said.

Just after 5 a.m., officers were alerted to several people trying to burglarize a freight train car in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.

As the officers approached, one of the suspects accelerated an SUV toward them, striking one. The other officers tried to shoot the driver, but they missed, police said.

The driver soon crashed into a marked CPD squad car and was taken into custody. Two guns were recovered in the vehicle, according to CPD.

Another vehicle, a van, was seen fleeing the shooting and later found by police near 71st Street and Yale Avenue. The driver of that van attempted to flee, police said, but crashed into two more squad cars.

A 30-year-old man who was in the van tried to run off, police said, but was struck by another passing vehicle and taken to a hospital in critical condition. No charges in the case were immediately announced and it was not immediately clear if anyone was struck by gunfire.

The officer struck by the SUV, the other suspect and two other officers were all taken to nearby hospitals. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening.
