Aug. 13, 1965 - Two thousand National Guardsmen with fixed bayonets moved into Los Angeles tonight to battle rioters in the burning and looted Getto area.
The Guardsmen were under orders to use rifles, machine guns, tear gas, and bayonets in support of a battered contingent of 900 policemen and deputy sheriffs.
Four persons were killed in the rioting today, including three rioters and a police officer. Thirty-three police officers had been injured, 75 civilians seriously injured, and 249 rioters had been arrested. This morning, violence spread to white areas.
Gangs of rioters appeared tonight in various parts of Los Angeles County, up to 20 miles from the riot scene in the Watts district. One group of about 25 rioters started tossing rocks in San Pedro in the harbor area, while another group appeared in Pacoima, a Black community in the San Fernando Valley. Police units dispersed these groups.
The National Guardsmen were brought into the riot zone in small convoys led by jeeps with machine guns mounted on them. The convoys contained one or two troop carriers. One Guard unit opened machine-gun fire for 10 minutes on a gang of rioters who then fled down the street.
One Guardsman said the rioters fired with pistols and at least one rifle. No one was apparently hit. The Guardsmen continued tonight to penetrate the riot area.
βTheyβve got weapons and ammo,β one Guard spokesman said. βItβs going to be like Vietnam.β
A National Guard spokesman said that, besides the 2,000 men in the area, thousands more were on their way.
The Guard, he said, plans to βhit them and make them stop.β
Throughout the Getto section, crowds numbering in the thousands were chanting, βWhite devils, what are you doing here?β
Unlike many race riots, the south Los Angeles melee has no main combat front.
βItβs guerrilla warfare,β said Police Chief William Parker.
