Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna will announce the arrest of a suspect in connection with the 2008 murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Juan Escalante.

On August 2nd, at approximately 5:40 a.m., Deputy Escalante, 27, was tragically shot outside his parents’ home in Cypress Park. He was preparing to leave for his shift at Men’s Central Jail when he was confronted by two gang members. According to witnesses, Deputy Escalante drew his weapon and identified himself as a deputy before the suspects opened fire. Sadly, he succumbed from the wounds he sustained.

NEW: A shot caller in the Whittier-based Quiet Village (QV) street gang pleaded guilty today to federal charges, including shooting a woman to death while attempting to murder a law enforcement source in Commerce in March 2022 and the attempted murder of a rival gang member in El Monte earlier that year.  Chase Carrillo, 36, a.k.a. “Sicko,” of Santa Fe Springs, the lead defendant in a 16-count superseding indictment targeting the gang, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and one count of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, resulting in death. He has been in federal custody since July 2023.
