Spokane County Sheriff’s Sergeant Killed in the Line of Duty

It is with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts that the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office confirms the line-of-duty loss of Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Kenneth Salas, a member of our agency and law enforcement family.

On August 9, 2025, at approximately 7:40 am, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Salas (59) was tragically killed when he was struck by a motorist while assisting with a large traffic hazard on eastbound I-90 near the Four Lakes exit.
Sergeant Kenneth Salas began his 34-year law enforcement career as a Spokane County Corrections Officer before joining the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. He served in many different assignments, including Patrol, School Resource Deputy, Traffic Unit, and the Emergency Operations Team.

In 2004, he earned the rank of Detective/Corporal, and in 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he was assigned as the Downtown Dayshift Patrol Sergeant Supervisor.

He is survived by his wife and extended family members, who ask you to respect their privacy as they grieve this devastating loss.

Sergeant Salas proudly served the Citizens of Spokane County for over three decades. He was not only a member of the Sheriff’s Office, he was also a valued and cherished member of our law enforcement family.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Sergeant Salas also served our Country for over two decades in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Technical Sergeant with the Washington State Air National Guard.

How many homes have been rebuilt in Lahaina 2 years after the fire?

According to the Maui Recovers Website:
- 425 residential permits have been issued.
- 270 homes are currently under construction.
- 48 homes have completed construction

And another 185 residential permits are currently being processed. We still have a long way to go but it’s good to see so many homes being built in town.

California: The 112,000 acre Gifford Fire is proving difficult to control in the Garcia Wilderness, and is making a push towards the Machesna Mountain Wilderness, fueled by two large fire columns observed yesterday afternoon.

Spot fires and slop-overs have been the focus of crews, while aviation continues to insert Hotshot Crews into the wilderness areas. Resources are now constructing fire-line to tie into the Madre Fire burn scar.

In the San Rafael Wilderness to the south, crews continue to advance handline construction, tying into existing control lines and are supported by aircraft with water drops. Thanks to the subscriber who shared these views of the Fire. Progress is being made as the fire is now 21% contained.

Maryland: Baltimore police are investigating a multi-victim shooting that occurred at 5101 Queensberry Avenue.

Authorities report that at least six individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, including a 5-year-old child and a 15-year-old juvenile.

Acton, CA - August 9, 2025 At approximately 6:43 p.m. on Saturday, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle was involved in a serious traffic collision along the southbound lanes of State Route 14 near Soledad Canyon Road in the Antelope Valley.

According to initial reports, the patrol unit veered to the right shoulder of the freeway and struck a dirt embankment, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times—approximately three—before coming to a stop. Two CHP officers were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and additional CHP units arrived on scene shortly after the incident. By the time they arrived, Los Angeles County Fire Department crews had already extricated both officers from the wreckage. The officers were transported by ambulance for medical evaluation and treatment.

Prayers for the Warner Robins Police officer who was shot in the line of duty yesterday.🙏🏻

A tense standoff unfolded at the Galleria Mall in Houston County, Georgia leaving one man dead and a Warner Robins Police Officer injured.

According to the Centerville Police Department, officers were initially dispatched in search of a tractor-trailer driven by a suspect who was wanted in a domestic dispute in Byron. As officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he allegedly opened fire, striking a Warner Robbin’s Police Officer.

The officer was hospitalized but thankfully released after just a few hours. A confrontation ensued, and officers returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death.
