BREAKING OVERNIGHT: At least 30 people were injured after a car plowed through a crowd in East Hollywood, when a driver apparently lost consciousness, authorities said.

Watch: Two drunk Mexicans—with open beers in the car—jumped the curb and plowed through traffic signs, wrecking their vehicle.

UPDATE: Around 2:00 a.m. this morning, Rampart Patrol officers responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon in the area of Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. Preliminary information indicates a vehicle drove into a crowd for reasons still under investigation.

When officers arrived, they found the driver being assaulted by bystanders and determined he had sustained a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

As a result of this incident, 23 individuals have been transported to hospitals for medical treatment. The suspect who shot the driver fled the scene on foot and was last seen heading westbound from Vermont Avenue and is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, bald, wearing a blue jersey, and possibly armed with a silver revolver.

This is from Santa Monica Observed: “The bomb squad uncovered two bombs in Santa Monica last night. Separately, an explosion killed 3 LA County Sheriff's deputies in East LA early this morning, while the LASD bomb squad was trying to defuse them. It is not yet clear whether the 2 stories are connected.”

To me, this reads as three separate incidents - recovery of the bombs in SM that I was told were supposed to be picked up by Camp Pendleton, the devices that detonated and killed the deps, and the suspicious package the bomb squad was called out to yesterday in SM on Montana and 14th.

In Tooele, Utah, a 9-year-old marketing mastermind had neighbors calling the cops when they saw his sign for “Ice Cold Beer.” Officers rolled up expecting a bootlegging operation—what they found was Colton Ray proudly slinging root beer in frosty mugs.

“I just wanted people to stop and buy some root beer,” Colton said. “And boy, did they!”

Local officers gave him points for creativity. One neighbor reportedly muttered, “I canceled my afternoon plans for this?”

Sales tripled after the visit, and Colton’s planning a lemonade spin-off under the label: “Locally Sourced Moonshine.” His parents are both proud... and slightly terrified.

POLICE OFFICER & DEPUTY INJURED: 

Louisiana: In the French Quarter of New Orleans, police have arrested a 23-year-old man accused of hitting an New Orleans Police Department officer and an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office deputy during a reckless driving incident in the French Quarter early July 18. The driver allegedly did 'doughnuts' near Bourbon and Conti streets before accelerating and hitting the officers on foot patrol when they tried to stop him. The NOPD officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition; the deputy was treated on scene.
