Deputy Sheriff David Piquette tragically lost his life in a traffic collision on State Route 91 while traveling to the department’s training academy.

The incident occurred in the 3300 block of the Riverside Freeway, where a stove—along with other items—fell from a moving pickup truck and landed in the traffic lanes. The debris prompted multiple vehicles to swerve in an attempt to avoid a crash. During the chain of events, a tractor-trailer overturned and landed on Deputy Piquette’s unmarked vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.

Investigators later discovered that the items, including the stove, had been stolen by the pickup driver, who fled the scene. The suspect, who had an extensive criminal history beginning at age 11, was later apprehended. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.

Deputy Piquette had dedicated a decade of service to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is remembered as a devoted husband and father, leaving behind his wife and young twin children.
