WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT! Hunters have been photographed slaughtering 23 pilot whales off the coast of the Faroe Islands. The hunt or 'grind' is a centuries-old tradition which aims to collect enough meat and blubber to feed the Islanders over the winter months. The hunters use spears to pierce the blubber of the whale (top left) before dragging them to shore. Environmental campaigners have criticised the proceedings, saying that the hunters failed to 'respect the whales' (pictured right) and said that children were seen 'playing with fins, kicking and punching the bodies.' π±π‘ #FOOLS

Japanese electronics maker NEC has unveiled its 'flying car' - a large drone-like machine with four propellers which could be available by the 2030s. The test flight saw it hover steadily for about a minute ten feet above the ground inside a gigantic cage designed to protect onlookers watching at an NEC facility in a Tokyo suburb. The preparations such as the repeated checks on the machine and warnings to reporters to wear helmets took up more time than the two brief demonstrations. #future

Residents in the Chinese city of Huai'an were stunned yesterday after a giant mirage of a 'ghost city' emerged over the horizon. The apparition appeared in the afternoon over the Hongze Lake in the province of Jiangsu in eastern China, according to local media. Ancient Chinese buildings with curved roofs, trees and a giant wind turbine were among the eerie images rising up through the mist that had descended over the lake. There is usually nothing but sky across the horizon. π³ #WOW #WTF?
Hong Kong was brought to a standstill on Monday morning as thousands of pro-democracy protesters blocked roads, disrupted trains and cancelled almost 200 flights as a mass strike got underway. Traffic snarled up as activists barricaded the Cross-Harbour tunnel linking Hong Kong island with the mainland, while trains were delayed as demonstrators held the doors of carriages open. Police fired rounds of tear gas at protesters outside Tin Shui Wai police station this afternoon during clashes as demonstrators gathered to rally against the officers' rough treatment of a female protester. Some of the activists had been hurling stones at the police station while others shouted 'triad' in Cantonese at a distance, accusing the police of colluding with gang members. #retract
