Deputy Sheriff Michael Arruda tragically passed away on June 15th, 2004 from a gunshot wound he sustained six days earlier in an accidental shooting involving another deputy.
On June 9, 2004, Deputy Arruda and three fellow deputies responded to reports of an armed suspect threatening individuals and firing shots at the Motel 6 located at 1154 S. 7th Avenue in Hacienda Heights. Upon arrival, they approached the unit where the suspect was reportedly staying. As the deputies neared the location, the suspect exited the room holding what appeared to be a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun, later determined to be a pellet gun designed to closely resemble a real firearm, and began shooting at them. The deputies returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.
During the exchange, Deputy Arruda was inadvertently struck in the neck by a round fired by a fellow deputy. He was immediately transported to Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he remained under intensive care until succumbing to his injuries six days later.
Deputy Arruda honorably served the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 13 years. He is survived by his son, daughter, fiancΓ©e, parents, brother, and sister.
