NEW: Approximately 200 U.S. Marines arrived in Los Angeles to begin an assignment to guard the Wilshire Federal Building in Westwood on Friday, according to an Army general, marking a rare occasion where military forces will be deployed on U.S. soil.

During a news conference Friday morning, Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman said the Marines arrived in LA last night, adding that the sole mission of the deployed Marines is to protect federal property and personnel.

The Marines will be armed with weapons and wearing crowd control gear such as a riot shield, baton and gas masks.

Former Lieutenant Indicted for Officer Involved Shooting

While in the performance of his duties in March of 2024, Lt. Bozard shot an armed subject in the city limits of Scotland Neck. Per protocol the N.C.S.B.I. was called to investigate. After just under a year and a half long investigation, on June 10, 2025 I was made aware the Grand Jury came back with a True Bill of Indictment on former Lt. John Bozard.

This indictment against Lt. Bozard is unfortunate but I respect the process of the Grand Jury and their findings. Grand Jury members are civilians that have stepped up to honorably serve our county. The Grand Jury takes the information thatโ€™s brought before them and based on their knowledge, training and experience they make a decision. Most Grand Jury members have never been trained on the use of force continuum nor ever been in a situation where they had to make a decision on whether or not to use deadly force to save lives or stop a deadly threat. Therefore, the Grand Jury only decides if a crime was probably committed and that a subject probably committed the crime.

During this incident, Lt. Bozard responded based not only on his training and experience to preserve life, but with the same training that every law enforcement officer in the State of NC receives. Based on the totality of the incident, Lt. Bozard utilized his training, experience, ongoing knowledge he had at the time during the incident to stop the threat to other innocent citizens and law enforcement officers.

I will never say all, but the bulk of law enforcement officers donโ€™t come to work with the intentions on shooting someone. However, while in the performance of our duties, if we are put in a situation where we must use deadly force to stop a threat, we should do so.

Lt. Bozard is not a bad apple or a rogue officer. He has been in law enforcement for over ten years serving in various ranks including the Special Response Team, also known as SRT. He has worked for three different Sheriffs while employed with the Sheriffโ€™s Office. He has demonstrated exemplary knowledge and leadership throughout his career under each one of these Sheriffs, including myself. Lt. Bozard is well respected throughout Halifax County and in the law enforcement community.

As law enforcement officers, we are put in situations where we must pull our firearms to protect ourselves or someone else. Having been a law enforcement officer for more than ten years and being on the Special Response Team, Lt. Bozard has pulled his firearm numerous times throughout his career. Each time before this incident, Lt. Bozard and the other officers were able to de-escalate the situations and bring a peaceful ending to each situation without having to fire his weapon.  Unfortunately, this incident was not able to be brought to a peaceful ending without using deadly force to stop the threat.

Lt. Bozard did not create the situation where he had to use force. He was called, along with other SRT members to the city limits of Scotland Neck at the request of the Scotland Neck Police Department because of an armed subject going through a crisis, making threats of violence, in a public place, and not following the commands of the Scotland Neck Police Department. Based on his training, experience, and the actions by the armed subject, Lt. Bozard determined deadly force was needed to stop the threat to protect other innocent lives.

After the threat was stopped, officers instantly provided lifesaving aid to the subject until EMS arrived. The subject was transported to a hospital where they were treated for their injuries and later released. I am thankful that no one was more seriously injured or lost their life during this incident.

Iโ€™m not going to vilify the subject that put Lt. Bozard in a situation where he felt he had no other choice other than to shoot the subject. Iโ€™m also not going to vilify Lt. Bozard for making the decision to stop the threat. I will continue to pray for the subject that was shot, Lt. Bozard and all those involved in this incident.

The Harrisonburg Police Department, Virginia, sadly announced the death of retired K9 Ziva.

Ziva was a military work dog from Fort Bragg that served overseas in Afghanistan as an explosive detection canine. In 2014, Rod Pollard adopted her through the FBI as a military-to-law enforcement transfer.  After serving her country, K9 Ziva partnered with Rod Pollard to serve Harrisonburg as an explosive detection dog.  K9 Ziva retired in 2020 as a veteran and police officer and enjoyed her retirement until her passing at 15 years old.

Prayers for Ziva's partner, their family and the agency.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

teamHCSO assisted Miami Police Department in locating and arresting a suspect wanted for murder.

On June 12, 2025, at 4:08 p.m., team HCSO deputies received information from the Miami Police Department indicating that a suspect wanted for murder was believed to be in Hillsborough County.

Deputies located the suspectโ€™s vehicle backed into a driveway on the 11000 block of Nicklaus Circle in Tampa. Deputies deployed a drone to maintain surveillance, while the Miami Police Department advised they were finalizing an arrest warrant for the suspect.

Shortly after a warrant was obtained, the suspect was seen exiting the garage and approaching the vehicle. Deputies moved in and took Juan Antonio Vera, 60, into custody without incident.

โ€œThis arrest is a testament to the seamless collaboration between agencies,โ€ said Sheriff Chad Chronister. โ€œWhen someone is wanted for a violent crime, it becomes a priority for all of us regardless of jurisdiction. Iโ€™m proud of the quick, coordinated response by our deputies and the strong partnership we have with the Miami Police Department in holding dangerous individuals accountable.โ€

Vera was booked into the Orient Road Jail and is pending extradition to Miami-Dade County.

For further information regarding the charges on Juan Antonio Vera, please reach out to the Miami Police Department.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Corporal J. Schaefer was working his assigned duty when he had an episode where he briefly dazed off and was unable to talk or respond.

Thankfully, the incident occurred while he was near a fellow officer.  Corporal Schaefer snapped out of it and felt rather normal, and finished his shift with no other symptoms. After persistent nagging by his close friends - he finally went to the hospital to get checked out.

The checkup unfortunately didnโ€™t go as expected, and there was a large tumor on his brain.  He was then admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital for further testing and monitoring. An MRI was conducted and surgery was scheduled. Corporal Schaefer underwent brain surgery.  After testing, the tumor was confirmed to be stage 2 cancer.  Corporal Schaefer is currently recovering at home as the neuro team prepares for rigorous treatment.

He is surrounded by his wife, children, family, and close friends as he prepares for the next phase of recovery.

Please join us in sending prayers and, or positive thoughts for his recovery.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
