Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a state trooper and four other vehicles that occurred early this morning on Interstate 95 in Howard County.

Police say at around 2:02 a.m., troopers responded to a report of a crash involving a trooper on southbound I-95, north of Maryland 100.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger in the Jeep was taken to Shock Trauma for treatment, officials said. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The trooper who was involved in the crash was treated at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and has since been released.

The driver of a GMC pickup truck was also hospitalized at Howard County General Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

A Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper is recovering after being shot during a traffic stop that turned violent Sunday in Nogales.

According to DPS, troopers stopped a vehicle near the area between Western Avenue and Grand Avenue around 11am on Sunday, June 8. During the stop, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking one of the DPS troopers.

According to Nogales Mayor Jorge Maldonado, a second trooper deployed a Taser on the suspect, successfully subduing and apprehending him at the scene.

DPS says the injured trooper sustained a non-life-threatening flesh wound. The trooper was transported to a local hospital for treatment but was released a short time later.
