LASD Staffing Crisis: 24% of the department gutted.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is grappling with a severe staffing crisis.

Over 4,000 positions are either vacant or filled by personnel unable to serve, leading to forced overtime and escalating mental health concerns among deputies. In a recent Civilian Oversight Commission meeting, LASD Assistant Sheriff Jason Skeen highlighted the dire situation, stating that the department is operating with approximately 24% of its workforce unavailable. This shortage has not only strained resources but also contributed to a troubling increase in deputy suicides.
