On Friday, after 21 years of service, Officer Patrick Buckheit retired.  Pat served in many different units in the department, but where he excelled was training.  Whether being a field training officer for new  recruits, or teaching the rest of us new techniques, he always wore a smile.  Pat is a phenomenal athlete and was even Olympic bound before becoming a police officer.  Pat thank you for your service to the city and to your Boca PD family.  You will be missed, but we are right around the corner.  Be safe and enjoy a well deserved rest!

NEW: A Florida woman was killed by an alligator during a canoeing trip with her husband, who tried to save her during the attack, officials said.

The husband and wife were canoeing in about 2 1/2 feet of water near Lake Kissimmee on Tuesday when the boat drifted over a large alligator, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The gator thrashed and tipped the canoe over, throwing both the husband and wife into the water.

Cynthia Diekema, 61, was bitten and died, officials said. Her body has since been recovered.
