UPDATE: Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle confirms that James Blake Montgomery, the suspect in last night's deadly officer involved shooting, is deceased.

Georgia: The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office gave an update on Saturday night’s deadly officer involved shooting that claimed the life of one deputy and injured another.

Deputy Brandon Sikes was shot and killed in the incident. Deputy Gavin White was shot in the face.

Columbia County officers then engaged Montgomery as he attempted to flee in the RV, veering off the interstate and into the wire barrier, stopping the vehicle.

Sheriff Whittle states that White is in critical condition, but has been able to communicate, saying he has a long road to recovery.

Please join us in sending prayers and, or, positive thoughts for his recovery. 🙏🏻

On April 27, 2025, Deputy Brandon Sikes of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was tragically killed in a senseless act of violence during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 20.

Sikes is survived by his wife, Amber, who is also an employee of the Sheriff’s Office.

Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, stating, "Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the loved ones and colleagues of the Columbia County sheriffs deputy that has fallen in the line of duty, as well as his fellow law enforcement officer injured tonight while protecting his fellow Georgians.

As they remain in our hearts and prayers, we’re also painfully reminded of why those who wear a badge have more than earned our enduring respect and appreciation."
