Meet Chief of Detectives William βShoesβ Schoemakerβa name that might not ring out today, but in the 1920s and β30s, he was one of the most respected cops in Chicago.
Starting out as a printerβs apprentice and then a Tribune circulation worker, Schoemaker joined the Chicago PD in 1903 and worked his way up the ranks. He served 33 years, was decorated for bravery 23 times, and led the Detective Bureau during some of the cityβs most violent years.
Schoemaker helped crack some of Chicagoβs biggest cases, including the $2 million Rondout train robbery in 1924βthe largest in U.S. history at the timeβand the infamous Leopold and Loeb murder. Known for his honesty and toughness, he was a copβs cop, earning the nickname β100% Policemanβ from his superiors.
And then there was the green chair in his officeββThe Undertakerβs Friend.β Suspects who sat in it had a way of ending up on the wrong end of a gangland hit. By 1934, 34 out of 35 had met a violent end.
In this photo, βShoesβ is holding confiscated Thompsons, but he looks more like a quiet accountant than a man who terrified gangsters and earned the loyalty of his detectives.

More than a dozen Jacksonville Good Samaritans stepped in during a dangerous situation, potentially saving a mother and two children from serious injury or worse.
On March 12, outside the Department of Motor Vehicles on North Main Street, witnesses saw a disturbing scene unfold. A man was driving away in an SUV as a woman was desperately trying to pull two childrenβages 2 years and 6 monthsβout of the back seat. Investigators determined the man was driving off against the womanβs will, dragging her and one of the children through the parking lot.
Without hesitation, people nearby rushed to help the woman and children. The bystanders were able to get them to safety before the driver fled the scene. They also provided a description and license plate number to 911 call takers.
Later that day, using witness accounts and video footage, JSO District 6 Task Force officers located the suspect, 26-year-old Yanni Human, outside a shopping center and arrested him. He is charged with child abuse and false imprisonmentβboth feloniesβalong with battery, possession of marijuana, and resisting an officer without violence.
This situation could have ended in tragedy. Your JSO is grateful for the quick action and bravery of the Good Samaritans who stepped up and helped bring the suspect to justice.
