NY: Dewitt man faces felony charges for assaulting officer after NY state trooper injured during arrest.

A trooper’s ankle was fractured last week as officers attempted to take a man into custody, police said.

The physical altercation happened on March 31, as troopers helped take David M. O’Brien, age 52, of Dewitt, into custody at 3800 New Court Ave. at about 6:51 p.m., said Capt. Kevin Reilly, a spokesperson for State Police.

Troopers were assisting the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office in arresting O’Brien on an active probation warrant when he started to resist and became combative, according to Reilly. Officers were able to gain control of O’Brien and apprehend him, but an assisting trooper’s ankle was fractured.

The trooper was taken to Upstate University Hospital.

Please join us in sending prayers and, or, positive thoughts for his recovery. 🙏🏻

Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said, "If you make a mistake in the Oakland Police Department ... you are going to get allegations levied against you that will ruin your career and your opportunity to work anywhere else in the United States. Our officers have been conditioned to do as little as possible to stay out of trouble and that is a problem."
