The first day of a sentencing hearing for Timothy Jones Jr was held in Lexington, South Carolina, on Thursday, two days after he was convicted in the 2014 killings of his five children. The defense asked jurors to have mercy on Jones and choose life in prison without parole because 'God could use people in dark places.'

Oklahoma police are investigating after former state Senator Jonathan Nichols (left) was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound inside his house. He is the second GOP former state senator found shot dead at home in just over 24 hours after a former Arkansas senator, Linda Collins-Smith, (pictured right) was discovered Tuesday. Police confirmed Thursday that the 53-year-old was found dead at the property in west Norman at about 8.44pm Wednesday.
