Drivers are being advised to stay off the roads as heavy snow and fallen trees caused widespread travel chaos in the aftermath of Storm Freya. Strong gusts of up to nearly 80mph whipped a large swathe of the country overnight, with downed trees and debris causing power cuts and affecting transport routes across the UK. The Met Office also issued a yellow warning for snow as heavy falls hit high routes across the Pennines, stranding motorists on the A595 in Cumbria.Pictured: A car abandoned on a snowy road between Cockermouth and Carlisle (left); a downed tree at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel and Country Club near Birmingham (bottom right); and a plane struggles in strong winds in Leeds (top right). Pictured inset: A map of the yellow weather warning for wind that was in place until 6am this morning. 😱

A group of teenagers came to the rescue of an eight-year-old boy as he fell from a chairlift at a Vancouver ski resort in Canada. Video shows the eight-year-old dangling from the side of a chairlift on Grouse Mountain some 25-feet in the air, holding onto his father, after he slipped. One of the teenagers, 14-year-old James Macdonald, said he didn't think the boy could hold on for very long, but his quick-thinking saved the boy from serious injury.πŸ˜±β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ

US-backed forces declared the battle for Baghouz in eastern Syria 'will be over soon' as they resumed their shelling of the town after evacuating thousands of women and children (pictured: bombardments explode, left and top right; inset left a Kurd dashes for cover and bottom right a Humvee rolls into position). The SDF forces have made painstaking progress to ensure the safety of women and children who the extremists have been cowering behind in their final days. Bombs rained down on the horizon as the siege entered its last violent passage. A 'fierce battle' is expected as the jihadists will deploy suicide bombers and fight to the death in a network of caves and tunnels beneath the town.πŸ˜±πŸš€
