Of the 20 Concordes built during the 1960s and 1970s, 17 remain dotted around the world, including seven in Britain, with an interactive map (inset) revealing where they can be found. Thousands of aviation enthusiasts will tomorrow flock to museums and airfields in the UK where the supersonic airliner is on display to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first ever flight. The Concorde prototype took off on March 2, 1969. It was flown for 27 minutes by test pilot Andre Turcat. Born out of a joint Anglo-French project, Concorde's success was savoured as a moment of intense national pride. Today the aircraft can be found at locations including Brooklands Museum in Surrey (top left), Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, (top right), the Auto & Technik Museum in Sinsheim, Germany, (bottom left) and the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York (bottom right). βοΈ #history
A new analysis on the 4.5 million-year-old partial skeleton of a female hominin has revealed a glimpse into the anatomical details of locomotion in the human ancestor, Ardipithecus ramidus. And, researchers now say this group may have been more adept at upright walking than previously suspected. The remains reveal adaptations in bones from the ankle and big toe that support bipedalism, or the ability to walk on two feet, though the experts say their gait was likely far from perfect. #science #history
