Donald Trump's negotiating session with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in Oval Office spiraled wildly out of control, with the politicians viciously tearing into each other in plain view of reporters. The talks were supposed to be about averting a government shutdown, which both sides said they wanted. But as the cameras rolled the three lectured each other, interrupted and jabbed fingers โ€“ with only Mike Pence, the vice-president, staying silent, Pelosi informed him that his border wall wouldn't pass in the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a majority of seats until the end of the year, if it came for a vote. 'The fact is you do not have the votes in the House,' she told him pointedly. And Chuck Schumer, the most senior Democrat, called Trump a โ€˜Pinocchioโ€™ and the two shouted angrily at each other as Pelosi tried to intervene. The government will shut down before Christmas if a bill to fund spending is not passed by both the House and the Senate and signed by Trump.

BREAKING NEWS! Judge awards Trump lawyers nearly $300,000 in Stormy Daniels case.

A California federal judge awarded attorneys for President Donald Trump nearly $300,000 in fees Tuesday related to a failed defamation claim brought by porn star Stephanie Clifford.

U.S. District Judge S. James Otero directed Clifford to pay $293,052.33 to Trump's lawyers, concluding that the attorneys were entitled to most โ€“ but not all โ€“ of the $389,403.11 they had sought.

Otero said Trump's firm could have relied more on "highly qualified associates" for the legal work than partners who charged higher fees.

"Defendant could have streamlined litigation by distributing more work to
the junior associates," the judge ruled. "Second, the descriptions of the work performed suggest that the hours spent on tasks by (Trump's) attorneys were excessive."

Clifford, known by her stage name Stormy Daniels, brought her claim after Trump sent out a tweet dismissing comments she had made in broadcast interviews.

Almost 300,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama after a winter storm dumped up to 12-18 inches of snow in some spots.
The deadly, record-breaking storm that walloped the South with snow and ice may be gone, but the mess it left behind continues to plague the region as temperatures sank well below freezing Tuesday morning.

The storm, which killed at least three people in hardest-hit North Carolina, dumped as much as 1-2 feet of snow across the southern and central Appalachians. It led to hundreds of car accidents, widespread power outages and travel headaches.

Scores of schools in Virginia and North Carolina were remaining closed for a second day Tuesday. Over 60,000 homes and businesses remained powerless Tuesday morning in Virginia and the Carolinas, Poweroutage.us said.

DOJ: Drug agent joined agency to supply guns, aid to violent trafficking organization.

Federal conspiracy charges were unsealed Tuesday against a 41-year-old U.S. drug agent who is accused of supplying firearms and other aid to a violent trafficking organization for the past decade.

Fernando Gomez, arrested in Chicago Tuesday morning, was named in an extraordinary indictment, alleging that he joined the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to provide greater assistance to La Organizacion de Narcotraficantes Unidos (La ONU), based in Puerto Rico.

Prosecutors alleged Gomez first began providing help to the group more than 10 years ago when he served as a detective for the Evanston Police Department in Illinois.

There's a cool doubleheader in outer space this week: In addition to the fly-by of comet 46P/Wirtanen over the weekend, the often spectacular Geminid meteor shower will also make its annual appearance Thursday.

With hundreds of meteors streaking across the night sky, the Geminids are often the best meteor shower of the year. "The reliable Geminid shower counts as one of the yearโ€™s best, peppering the nighttime sky with 50-120 meteors per hour at its peak," noted EarthSky.org.

More good news: The crescent moon will set around 10:30 p.m., leaving the rest of the night moon-free, Astronomy.com said. Observers under a clear dark sky can expect to see an average of two per minute.

The Geminids are named for the constellation Gemini, the point from which the meteors seem to radiate. To be more specific, the meteors will appear to emanate from a spot in the sky near the bright star Castor in Gemini, Space.com's Joe Rao said.

This meteor shower is active every December, when Earth passes through a massive trail of dusty debris shed by a weird, rocky object named 3200 Phaethon, NASA said. The dust and grit burn up when they run into Earth's atmosphere in a flurry of "shooting stars."

'I will fight it with everything I've got': Defiant May vows to contest TONIGHT'S no-confidence vote and will learn her fate at 9pm after Tory rebels trigger leadership battle by finally getting 48 letters.

Theresa May said she would not give up after Eurosceptics secured the 48 letters from MPs needed to force a ballot that could end her time as leader. In a defiant speech on the steps of Downing Street (pictured left), she warned Brexit would need to be delayed beyond March 29 if she loses and Jeremy Corbyn might end up in power. 'I have devoted myself unsparingly since I became Prime Minister... and I stand ready to finish the job,' she said. Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the powerful 1922 committee, emerged this morning to announce the threshold of 48 letters had been 'exceeded' (pictured inset and press release left) and Mrs May was eager to resolve the issue 'rapidly'. He said the PM's reaction when he notified her last night had been 'business like' and she will deliver a make-or-break speech to MPs at 5pm before voting begins an hour later. The crucial result will be declared as soon as counting finishes. Cabinet ministers immediately rallied to try and shore up Mrs May, with Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid, Michael Gove, Amber Rudd, Penny Mordaunt and Brandon Lewis among those making clear they will be support her. Mrs May - who has cancelled a planned visit to Ireland and a Cabinet meeting this afternoon - can stay on if she wins the confidence ballot by just one vote, and would theoretically be immune from challenge for another 12 months.

Mubarik Cadani, 31, has been jailed for 20 months at Isleworth Crown Court for smashing PC James McGahan in the face with his elbow at Hounslow Police Station. Today Scotland Yard released footage of the attack that took place minutes after the suspect had been arrested for a separate assault. PC McGahan was booking him into Hounslow's custody suite when Cadani suddenly launched the attack with his right arm. He can be seen surreptitiously raising his elbow before ploughing it into the policeman's cheek and nose. Two other officers jump on him as PC McGahan spins backwards holding his face and the broken nose was so bad he missed two weeks of work due to the injury. Cadani was jailed for the unprovoked attack on August 21 this year and will serve at least ten months.
