WARNING! GRAPHIC CONTENT! NYPD Critical Incident Briefing -- 71 Precinct, Officer Involved Shooting January 4, 2021
Moscow rejected new sanctions imposed on it by the U.S. late Tuesday, describing the restrictions led by President Joe Biden's administration as "hostile," NBC LA reported. Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said last night that it would retaliate. "This is just a pretext for the continuing undisguised interference in our domestic affairs, and we will not accept this," Maria Zakharova, a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, said in a statement. "Based on the principle of reciprocity, we will respond but not necessarily with symmetrical measures." She added that sanctions would fail: "Any hopes to impose something on Russia by way of sanctions or other pressure have failed in the past and will fail now."
Here’s who qualifies for a $1,400 stimulus payment under the American Rescue Plan.

Individuals earning an adjusted gross income (AGI) up to $75,000 (and married couples earning up to $150,000) will receive $1,400 each, plus $1,400 for each dependent. That means an eligible family of four will receive $5,600.

After those income thresholds, the payments phase out. Individuals earning an AGI over $100,000 per year and couples earning over $200,000 will not receive a check.

Unlike the previous two payments, adult dependents qualify for this round. A previous report from the American Enterprise Institute estimates that as many as 26 million more people — mainly college students, disabled adults and elderly Americans — will now be eligible for a payment. The check could arrive as soon as next month.

The payments are based on either 2019 or 2020 income. That means taxpayers may want to file their taxes before the bill passes if that would net them a larger stimulus payment.

While many workers have run into delays receiving the unemployment insurance they’re entitled to, stimulus checks, which are disbursed by the Internal Revenue Service rather than state governments, can help them stay current on their bills.

A first-ever “space hurricane” was spotted whirling above the Earth, scientists said. The 600-mile-wide mass of plasma occurred several hundreds of miles above the North Pole, according to a study in the journal Nature Communications. “Until now, it was uncertain that space plasma hurricanes even existed, so to prove this with such a striking observation is incredible,” said Mike Lockwood, a space scientist at the University of Reading and co-author of the study, in a statement. The spectacle was captured by satellites in August 2014, but only recently uncovered during research led by scientists from Shandong University in China. The space hurricane “rained” electrons instead of water, had multiple spiral arms and lasted eight hours before gradually fizzing, researchers said. “Tropical storms are associated with huge amounts of energy, and these space hurricanes must be created by unusually large and rapid transfer of solar wind energy and charged particles into the Earth’s upper atmosphere,” Lockwood said.
BREAKING! After a months-long operation, the United States Marshals Service, Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation recovered 150 missing children across the state. During a press conference Wednesday morning, authorities involved revealed the results of "Operation Volunteer Strong". According to Shelly Smitherman, Assistant Special Agent in Charge at TBI, the operation started in fall 2020 and TBI Intelligence Analysts were able to compile files for 240 missing children across the state. The operation efforts started on January 4. 150 of the 240 missing children recovered range in age from 3 to 17-years-old, Smitherman said. A press release states that in East Tennessee, authorities identified 86 missing children. 56 were recovered and five of them are in other states. Authorities located 27 of them in the weeks leading up to the operation and three after the conclusion. (Read more.)
Rep. Jim Jordan: "If the government bans so-called 'assault weapons', mass public shootings will still occur, and the same politicians will then try to ban shotguns and handguns."
