Latest Updates: Trump's 2nd Impeachment Trial Begins. President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial begins on Tuesday, a solemn proceeding that will force lawmakers to relive the violent events of Jan. 6 as House Democrats prosecute their case for "incitement of insurrection." The nine Democratic impeachment managers for the House, which impeached Trump last month, argue that he alone was responsible for inciting the mob of supporters who broke into the U.S. Capitol and interrupted the presidential electoral count. Lawyers for Trump argue that the trial is unconstitutional and say the former president was exercising freedom of speech when he told his supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn his defeat. The trial is expected to last into the weekend and possibly longer. It will begin midday Tuesday and could go late into some evenings.

WARNING! GRAPHIC CONTENT! Pittsburg, California -- The city has publicly released body camera footage showing an officer shooting and wounding an Oakland man who authorities say pointed a loaded handgun at the policeman. Kerdell Lillard, 32, survived being shot in the arm by Pittsburg police Ofc. Richard Beltram, who is in his second year as a policeman. Lillard has been charged with assault and gun possession, both felonies, authorities said. The Jan. 30 shooting occurred at a shopping center on the 2900 block of Harbor Street in Pittsburg, where police had been called to reports of an armed man on the roof of a business. A police news release says Lillard also called police that day to report a kidnapping and that he was being “framed.” When authorities arrived, Lillard was on the ground. The video shows multiple officers yelling at him to go prone. He sits next to a metallic pickup truck. (Read the Full Story.)
Denver -- Colorado schools could soon teach kids how to differentiate between fake news & credible media.

The internet has expanded kids’ access to information. Now, two state lawmakers want to help them identify misinformation and disinformation.

From Facebook and Twitter to blogs and apps, the information landscape is vast and State Rep. Barbara McLachlan said facts can vary widely.

“Whenever somebody starts off a sentence with ‘I read somewhere that this happened’, you think, wait a minute. I think we all need to be a little distrustful about where people are getting their information,” McLachlan said.

A school teacher turned state lawmaker, McLachlan says kids who consume news almost exclusively online are especially vulnerable. A study by Stanford University found 82 percent of middle school students can’t tell the difference between an online ad and a news story.

McLachlan and State Rep. Lisa Cutter are carrying a bill to improve media literacy among kids.

“We don’t want to teach kids what to think,” says Cutter. “We’re not taking a stand that one side is right and another is wrong, or one outlet is good and one outlet is bad. We just want to give them the tools so they can figure it out and understand what makes a credible source and then they can form their own opinions about that information.”
