LOS ANGELES - A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of whoever is slashing the pouches and necks of brown pelicans on the Southern California coast. International Bird Rescue posted the reward after four pelicans with identical, severe injuries were brought in for care at its facility in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles. Three of the birds were brought in from Marina del Rey in Los Angeles County and the fourth was rescued at Ventura Harbor in Ventura County. The organization noted that a pelican with similar injuries was brought in from Ventura Harbor in the fall of 2019. International Bird Rescue said in a statement this week that the injuries are different than the hundreds of pelican pouch injuries seen by staff veterinarian Rebecca Duerr. Most injuries are caused by fish hooks, boat propeller strikes of those or similar accidents, but the apparently deliberately injured birds have straight cuts through both sides of the pouch, it said.

ROCKFORD, Ill. — A gunman opened fire inside an Illinois bowling alley, killing three people and injuring three others Saturday night in what authorities believe was a random attack. A "person of interest" was taken into custody after the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said during a news conference. He said two of those who were shot were teenagers. O’Shea did not immediately release additional information about the victims or the person who was taken into custody. He described the scene as contained and said he did not think any officers fired their weapons while apprehending the person of interest. Rockford is about 80 miles northwest of Chicago. The Rockford Register Star reported that 2020 has been the city’s deadliest year for homicides, according to records that date back to 1965. Thirty-five people have been killed in the city this year, breaking the previous record of 31 in 1996

Free speech on Parler? Bullshit!
A sheriff’s deputy was fired after making hateful and threatening remarks on a secret Parler account uncovered on Friday. The account, discovered by independent journalist Molly Conger, is run by former Deputy Aaron Hoffman of the Prince William County Sheriff's Office in Virginia. According to INSIDENOVA, Hoffman was fired after an internal affairs investigation by the sheriff's office. Sheriff Glendell Hill told INSIDENOVA in an email that the agency was notified of "disturbing comments being made on several social media outlets by a deputy sheriff" on Friday. Hill reportedly ordered an investigation into the matter. "The investigation has concluded and the deputy has been terminated from employment with this agency," Hill said. The sheriff's office released a similar statement on Facebook.

Why carjackings have skyrocketed in parts of the country during the pandemic. After almost 30 years working as a firefighter in Chicago, Lt. Dwain Williams was familiar with danger. So perhaps it is not surprising that when confronted by three men trying to take his car, he was prepared to fight rather than forfeit his SUV. He drew the gun that he legally carried. But the carjackers also had guns and fatally shot him, fleeing as they did so. A week later, they remain on the loose. The assault on Williams, captured on surveillance video recently released by the Chicago police in an effort to identify and catch his killers, focused attention on a dramatic spike in carjackings there. In all of 2019, there were 501 incidents of that crime. So far that number has more than doubled to 1,125 this year, according to the latest Chicago police statistics. (Read more.)

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Authorities say a 37-year-old U.S. serviceman from Florida has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of first-degree attempted murder following a shooting at a bowling alley in Rockford Saturday night. Three people were killed and three people were wounded. The suspect, Duke Webb, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, Rockford Police Chief Daniel O'Shea said at a news conference Sunday. At approximately, 6:55 p.m. on Saturday night, Rockford police received calls of shots fired at Don Carter Lanes. Officers were dispatched and arrived within a minute of the first calls of shots fired, Chief O'Shea said. Upon arrival, officers heard gunfire inside the building. They then entered the building and attempted to locate the suspect. Webb was located within a few minutes and taken into custody. Chief O'Shea said Webb tried to hide his weapons and "obscure his identification" prior to officers taking him into custody.
