A New York Police Department officer who was shot in the back during a domestic violence incident in Brooklyn on Thursday was saved by his bulletproof vest, in what officials called a "Christmas miracle."

The incident began before 9 p.m. when the NYPD received a series of 911 calls from a mother saying, "Get here quick, get here now. He's going to come over here and shoot the place up," according to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea. The mother was referring to her daughter's boyfriend, he said.

NYPD officers from the 77th Precinct arrived at the Crown Heights home and had begun interviewing the mother and daughter when the boyfriend pulled up to the home and opened fire, Shea said.

"You see incredible bravery by the officers," said Shea, who reviewed the body camera footage. "You see the girlfriend point out and next thing you hear is shots being fired."

One officer was struck in the back -- but the bulletproof vest kept the bullet from penetrating the officer, Shea said as he held up the vest.

Dumbest Mayor de Blasio: "We're going to have sheriff's deputies go to the home or the hotel of every single traveler coming in from the U.K."

NEW YORK CITY, NY – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced steps being taken to ensure quarantine protocols are being followed by those visiting the Big Apple.

But among the methods being employed to step up enforcement of pandemic protocols, those traveling from the U.K. are going to be afforded special attention.

Those who are looking to make their way to New York City around this time can count on one thing, and that is there will be some hefty fines if anyone chooses to violate quarantine orders.

Reportedly, violating the mandated quarantine after arriving in NYC will result in a $1,000 fine per daily violation.

But if someone is coming from the U.K. – which the country has played host to a new strain of COVID-19 – Mayor de Blasio says they can expect an in-person visit from sheriff’s deputies to make sure they’re following the quarantine.

This measure is already on top of the existing deal struck between New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and airlines to make sure that every traveler coming from the U.K. has tested negative for the virus before boarding their flight. (Read more.)

A police dog took a bite out of crime -- literally -- on Xmas Eve. The incident went down Thursday afternoon in Ontario, CA, just outside L.A. Cops spotted a stolen car on the 15 freeway and tried stopping the driver, to no avail. The car eventually stopped on the freeway and cops tried negotiating with the suspect for at least 10 minutes ... before unleashing the #K9. You see the dog leap through the driver's side window and latch on to the suspect's arm. The suspect tried fighting off the dog, but the dog had other ideas. A bunch of officers came in for the assist and took the suspect into custody. Traffic was backed up for miles on Xmas Eve as a result.
