An unoccupied orange SUV was found swallowed by a sinkhole in Queens. The vehicle, a Toyota RAV4, was discovered nose-down in the massive sinkhole at about 6 a.m. on 70th Street near 52nd Avenue in Maspeth, authorities said. The FDNY said they responded to the location for reports of trauma. But it was determined there were no patients as the SUV was unoccupied. The sinkhole led to several street closures in the area, Holden said.
The owner of a barbecue restaurant in Canada remained open during the coronavirus pandemic, and defied government lockdown orders. Adam Skelly, the owner of Adamson Barbecue in Etobicoke, was arrested on Thursday and dragged away in handcuffs in front of a crowd that gathered to show support of his defiance of coronavirus. After allegedly being detained for over 30 hours, Skelly was released on $50,000 bail. Skelly claims that one of the conditions for release was that he is not permitted to use social media. Toronto Police Supt. Dom Sinopoli justified Skelly's arrest by saying, "We have formed a baseline as to how Mr. Skelly chooses to operate. We have now cautioned him up until today that our enforcement will progress and it did." Skelly's next court appearance will be on Jan. 4.

After helping to mobilize election turnout of young people and left-leaning Democrats, progressive leaders want to hold the Biden administration to promises made on the campaign trail: addressing climate change, combatting the COVID-19 pandemic and offering student debt relief. But as progressives lean into their policy demands, one roadblock remains: Who will control the Senate? Two runoffs in Georgia will determine whether Republicans maintain control of the chamber when the new Congress is sworn in in January. If the Republican majority holds, not only will it be difficult for Democrats to pass legislation, it will likely mean the progressive wish list will be left on the backburner. (Read more.)
The Bahrain Grand Prix was halted on lap one after Haas's Romain Grosjean suffered a dramatic crash. The Frenchman escaped with what are thought to be minor injuries after his car struck a barrier and caught fire. The race had only just got underway when Grosjean, who started from 19th on the grid, moved across the track and touched with Daniil Kvyat's AlphaTauri before spearing off the track and into the barrier just after Turn 3. The car, heavy with fuel, was badly damaged and immediately burst into flames as the marshals appeared on the scene, along with the Medical Car that follows the pack on Lap 1 of every race. Just moments later Grosjean leapt from the burning wreckage as the marshals and safety officials began putting the fire out. The race was immediately red flagged and the other drivers filed around the track and back into the pit lane.

UPD: A โgruesomeโ massacre against farmers in northeastern Nigeria killed at least 110 people, the United Nations has said, raising tolls initially indicating 43 and then at least 70 dead. The killings took place in the early afternoon of Saturday in the village of Koshobe and other rural communities in the Jere local government area near Maiduguri, the capital of the conflict-hit Borno state. โArmed men on motorcycles led a brutal attack on civilian men and women who were harvesting their fields,โ Edward Kallon, the UNโs humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, said in a statement on Sunday. โAt least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack,โ he added, noting that several women are believed to have been kidnapped. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, but the armed group Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State in West Africa Province, have carried out a series of deadly assaults in the area in recent years.
