COSTA MESA, Calif. - Cell phone video showed dozens of people running toward a flipped-over pickup truck in a Costa Mesa intersection overnight. Many shouted panicked instructions to others as the chaotic scene unfolded. Costa Mesa Police say as many as 100 vehicles had flooded the intersection of Sunflower and Hyland Avenues - driving erratically and performing stunts in front of a crowd of onlookers. Then, the truck flipped, killing a 23-year-old passenger, now identified as Sergio Marroquin, Jr. Costa Mesa Police said the victim’s cousin, 22-year-old Mynor Esquivelvalle, was driving. He was arrested at the scene and will face murder charges.

Dashcam police video shows a California corporal saving a woman trapped in an overturned, flaming car by pulling her out by her wrists. City of Davis Police Cpl. Pheng Ly was near Interstate 80 and Highway 113 on Saturday night when he heard about the wreck through the California Highway Patrol scanner. Ly was closer than any CHP officers, the outlet reported. He arrived to find the flipped vehicle next to the roadway, with flames spewing from its side.

A Black Lives Matter chapter in California has launched an effort to get members trained in gun safety to protect themselves and their communities. "As Black folks, we have learned that we are running out of resources when it comes to being protected," the fundraiser launched by BLM Sacramento founder Tanya Faison reads. "Police are killing us. White nationalists are threatening us. The president is supporting the nationalists." The effort aims to raise $2,000 to send 10 people to get training, which includes how to hold, clean and safely store firearms. As protests continue over police brutality and racial injustice, Faison told KOVR-TV that gun safety education is not related to the demonstrations but is necessary in case of home invasions or attacks from White supremacists.
