A FedEx cargo jet made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport before dawn Wednesday with sparks flying as the engine under its left wing appeared to drag along the runway. One of the two crew members aboard was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening leg injury reportedly sustained while exiting the aircraft, said Margaret Stewart, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman. The crew of FedEx Flight 1026, a Boeing 767, could not extend the left main landing gear before touching down around 4:50 a.m. after a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA will investigate.

Tucker Carlson Tonight: “Politicians used to try to convince you of things. The assumption was, you were in charge. You were the voter, which is to say, the boss. If they wanted the job, they had to win you over. It was a cumbersome process, so they’ve abandoned it. Now they just browbeat you into accepting their program. If you don’t like it, it’s your fault. You’re the bad guy. You’re immoral."

More than 20 people in California were arrested in connection with an elaborate scheme in which they used the personal information of 30 inmates to file more than $250,000 worth of bogus unemployment claims, officials said. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday the discovery of a “large-scale Pandemic Unemployment Assistance fraud ring” run out of San Mateo County’s Maguire Correctional Facility and responsible for 16 claims that were filed between June 9 and July 30, the department said in a press release. The investigation began after a law enforcement officer within the jail “overheard inmates conversing about these fraudulent claims,” the release states. So far, police have discovered more than $250,000 in illegitimate payments and have recovered $150,000 in cash, officials said.

About two dozen large wildfires are blazing across the state California forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate, with Gov. Gavin Newsom ordering a state of emergency. At least 23 massive fires, some triggered by lightning strikes and fueled by a historic heat wave and high winds, stretch from Napa, Sonoma, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties, and have triggered rolling power blackouts and unhealthy air quality across the region. Over the last 72 hours 10,849 lightning strikes were reported statewide, sparking roughly 367 new fires the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a press conference Wednesday. So far authorities believe the fires have burned through 300,000 acres and have released so much smoke that it is visible from space via satellite imagery. Much of the fires are affecting the San Francisco Bay Area, where thick smoke blanketed the city.
