SALT LAKE CITY — A vehicle with five occupants landed upside down in the Jordan Surplus Canal after the driver lost control on Saturday, August 8. The woman and four children, ages 17, 16, 15, and 2, were in the car driving near Indiana Ave. and Delong St., at around 11:00 p.m., when it went into the water. The driver and two older children were able to escape from the submerging vehicle, but the two youngest were still trapped when several Salt Lake City police officers arrived. Upon arrival, four officers quickly removed their vests and belts and ran into the water to save the children as the car slipped under the surface. One officer dived into the water several times to enter through a window but was unable to get in due to the murkiness of the water. The children were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Metallica will make their long-awaited return to the stage this month as part of the Encore Drive-In Nights series, screening their first concert of 2020 at hundreds of drive-ins and outdoor theaters across the U.S. and Canada on Aug. 29., Forbes reported. The thrash metal titans will become the first non-country act to participate in the series, following successful drive-in showcases from Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton, with the former drawing 350,000-plus fans to more than 300 venues across North America. As with those shows, participating venues will adhere to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines, including outfitting staff with personal protective equipment and maintaining at least six feet of space between cars. Tickets to the Encore Drive-In Nights gig cost $115 per carload, which admits up to six people. Post-grunge rockers Three Days Grace will “open” the show.

BEAUMONT, Texas -- A 23-year-old Beaumont officer died in crash caused by a wrong-way driver, according to police chief Jim Singletary. The crash left an unnamed officer in critical, but stable condition. The chief said two-year officer Sheena Yarbrough, of Lumberton, died in the crash. “It’s a sad day for the Beaumont Police Department and the community,” Singletary said at a press conference Sunday. A confrontation with a suspected car thief sent two Chicago police officers to the hospital overnight.
Black Lives Matter Chicago said early Monday's looting of stores was a form of 'reparations' as the group held a protest Monday night in support of the more than 100 people arrested after an evening of violence. Downtown Chicago was otherwise quiet after authorities cut off access, with drawbridges leading into the city pulled up and freeway exits blocked after riots sparked by a false rumor of a child shot by police. At least 13 police officers were injured as the violence claimed an estimated $65 million in property damage. Ariel Atkins, a BLM organizer, called the looting 'reparations'. 'I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,' Atkins said. 'That makes sure that person has clothes. 'Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.' #facepalm
