More than 150 Minneapolis police officers have filed for disability claims, with many claiming post-traumatic stress disorder for their departures following weeks of soaring crime and unrest following the death of George Floyd, an attorney for the officers said Friday. The claims come as the city experiences an increase in crime and elected leaders attempt to dismantle the police department and create a new public safety apparatus. "I'm seeing PTSD symptoms of officers with highly diminished capacity to live and socialize, extraordinary rates of divorce, and alcohol dependency – just to cope. It is an emotional crisis that cannot and should not continue," he said in a statement. Meuser said he's been approached officers to file for disability claims through the state's Public Employment Retirement Association, or PERA. Around 75 officers have left the force or turned in paperwork with the intention of leaving, Meuser said during a news conference Friday.

California will release around 8,000 prison inmates early in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus in state correctional facilities, with more than half expected to return to society by the end of July. The move will allow prisons to use the extra space to impose social distancing rules, isolation and quarantine measures, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement. The department estimates 8,000 inmates could be released by the end of August, providing they meet several criteria. Prisoners with a year or less left on their sentences are eligible for early release. Those with convictions of violent felonies and sex crimes are not. Anyone released from custody will be tested for the virus within seven days of their return to society, the CDCR said.

The Charlottesville Police Department has released body camera video from an incident that occurred on the Downtown Mall on Wednesday. This comes after a Charlottesville attorney sent a message to the police department requesting the video be released. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when someone called police for a person who was on the ground near the skeleton of the Dewberry hotel. Someone filmed the incident and shared it on Instagram, and the attorney called for an explanation of why the responding officer appeared to assault the person. That person, who is homeless, has been charged with public intoxication, obstruction of justice and assault of an officer.

Two police officers were shot and killed in McAllen, Texas, on Saturday night, according to officials. The shooting took place as the officers were responding to a call at a home and came under fire. "What I’m trying to tell you is the officers never had a chance to suspect a deadly assault on them," McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said at a press conference. The suspect shot himself and died as other officers arrived on the scene, Rodriguez said. He was told to drop the gun, but instead shot himself. Officers Edelmiro Garza, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39, were both killed. Garza had been on the force for about nine years, while Chavez had been employed by McAllen for about 2 1/2 years. Both officers were pronounced dead at a local hospital. The suspect, identified as Aldon Caramillo, 23, had a history of arrests. His previous charges included driving under the influence, fleeing from officers, assault and marijuana possession. #RIP
