Shootings soar 205 percent in NYC after NYPD disbands anti-crime unit

Two men were injured, one critically, after a lightning strike at Clearwater Beach in Florida on Sunday afternoon. The Clearwater Fire and Rescue Department said the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. on the north part of Clearwater Beach, about halfway between the waterline and dunes. "Both were trying to leave the beach as the weather deteriorated when the strike occurred," the Clearwater Police Department tweeted. A 37-year-old man was unconscious and not breathing when he was approached by a Clearwater police officer who began CPR until the lifeguard arrived and took over medical treatment. Rescue crews then arrived and began treating the 37-year-old victim, who was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The second victim, a 43-year-old man, was a few feet away from the first victim when the lightning strike happened. He was also taken to an area hospital and was listed in stable condition.

A federal judge ordered the shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline and that it be emptied, while a lengthy environmental review is conducted. The pipeline must be emptied by August 5, the court ordered Monday, after finding that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers violated “the National Environmental Policy Act when it granted an easement” for the pipeline’s construction and operation of crude-oil running beneath Lake Oahe.U.S. District Judge James Boasberg wrote in a 24-page order that he was “mindful of the disruption such a shutdown will cause,” but said he had concluded that it was necessary. The decision comes after the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe requested the pipeline be shut down for fear of environmental harm. The $3.8 billion, 1,172-mile underground pipeline sparked months of protests, sometimes violent, during its construction near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation that straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.

The fatal incidents come as shootings are on the rise in places like New York City – and continue to persist in Chicago, where a girl attending a holiday party was among the recent victims.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina -- A Charleston County Sheriff's deputy remains in critical condition after he was struck while assisting a tow truck driver with a disabled vehicle on July 1. Deputy Mike Costanzo stopped on Interstate 526 westbound on the Don Holt Bridge just before 10 a.m. to assist a tow truck driver and a disabled motorist when a westbound vehicle struck the deputy's marked patrol vehicle, which then struck other vehicles on scene, according to a news release. The impact of the crash left Costanzo with critical injuries and caused tow truck driver William Ellis to go over the bridge before his body was found a day later in the water near Daniel Island. Costanzo had worked for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office between 1994 and 2006, then returned in April 2017. He has served as a much-loved SRO at Sullivan’s Island Elementary during the school year and was assigned to the Marine Patrol Unit this summer. 🙏🏼

Atlanta, GA – Following weeks of dramatically increased violent crime and property destruction in the City of Atlanta, the July Fourth weekend saw over thirty Georgians wounded by gunfire, including five confirmed dead. Today Governor Kemp issued Executive Order 07.06.20.01, which declares a State of Emergency across Georgia and authorizes the activation of as many as 1,000 Georgia National Guard troops. “Peaceful protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now, innocent Georgians are being targeted, shot, and left for dead,” said Governor Kemp. “This lawlessness must be stopped and order restored in our capital city. I have declared a State of Emergency and called up the Georgia Guard because the safety of our citizens comes first. This measure will allow troops to protect state property and dispatch state law enforcement officers to patrol our streets. Enough with the tough talk. We must protect the lives and livelihoods of all Georgians.”

Oregon police were called to an ocean beach on the Fourth of July and arrested seven white adults they say harassed a Black family with racial slurs and Nazi salutes. The incident began with officers responding around 9:30 p.m. to a report of a group of people shooting off illegal fireworks and causing a disturbance. More officers arrived after the cops who initially responded were surrounded by the group, taunted and challenged to fights. Police said officers also spoke to the family who complained about the harassment and said they felt intimidated. The men arrested were: Gennadiy Kachankov, 30, Antoliy Kachankov, 28, Andrey Zaytsev, 28, Oleg Saranchuk, 45, Ruslan Tkachenko, 22, and Yuriy Kachankov, 30. A seventh man refused to identify himself, police said. All were from Clark County in Washington state. All were all charged with riot, interfering with police, disorderly conduct II, harassment, possession of illegal fireworks, and offensive littering.
