Police arrested a 16-year-old boy last Wednesday suspected of killing 4 people during a series of violent crimes throughout the Washington D.C. area. Michael Mason reportedly conducted the fatal shootings over a 7-week span between April 7 and May 22 in two separate districts. They added that at least five other people were wounded during the spree. Mason denied his involvement during interviews with homicide detectives, according to an arrest affidavit. One of the alleged victims included a woman who was used as a “human shield” by a person targeted by a gunman. Police said the fatal shooting involving one woman, Brea Moon, 21, occurred 11 days after Mason was released from juvenile detention. Mason was identified after authorities used facial recognition software to compare a photo given by a victim with images of Mason on social media. Police added that Mason reportedly tried to sell a .40-caliber gun on Instagram following one of the killings.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has set his sights on the staggering surge in fireworks use - as a startling video emerging showing a group of men aiming and shooting one at a person sleeping on the sidewalk in Harlem. A video that made the rounds on Monday shows one man tossing the lit fireworks in the direction of a sleeping homeless person earlier that day. A small flame grows into a fireworks burst as the man flees from the person sleeping on the pavement, who appears motionless. New York Police Department’s Chief of Detectives, Rodney Harrison, said in a Tuesday morning tweet the victim was a homeless man who suffered burns to his back. His attackers were still on the loose as of 7 a.m. After nights of fireworks complaints, hundreds of people reportedly drove to de Blasio’s home, Gracie Mansion, on Monday night to honk in protest of his alleged lack of action against firework deployment, according to social media.
As Washington, D.C., police officers held their line outside Lafayette Park Monday night, a viral moment caught on video shows officers keeping their cool as protesters pepper them with insults and provocations. Julio Rosas, senior writer at Townhall com, was reporting from the scene when he captured a protester confronting police. Preceding the moment, the protester was pushed to the ground after putting his hands on an officer, Rosas reported, citing an eyewitness account. “You’re part of the fucking problem. And I hope that your children treat you the way you deserve to be treated, ”a white protester tells a black officer. The black officer, outfitted in riot gear, stands his ground and stays quiet as the white protester continues to rant, video shows. Rosas posted other videos of protesters screaming obscenities and provocations at police officers.

A New Jersey State Police trooper was thrown 30 feet through the windshield of his cruiser during a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike involving a dump truck and was seriously hurt, but expect to recover, officials said. “How that trooper lived, is unbelievable,” acting State Police Superintendent Patrick Callahan said, noting that being thrown from the vehicle is likely what saved the man’s life. Photos of the mangled SUV showed the driver’s side crushed with the driver’s seat pressed into the dashboard.
