AMHERST, Ohio — A State Highway Patrol trooper suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a SUV while directing traffic Tuesday evening. The crash occurred about 6:15 p.m. on Middle Ridge Road at Ohio 2, where troopers were directing traffic because of a broken traffic signal, the Highway Patrol said in a news release. The driver of a Kia Sportage struck the trooper while making a left turn onto Middle Ridge Road from the Ohio 2 exit ramp, the news release says. An ambulance took the trooper to Lorain Mercy Hospital, where he is in stable condition. The SUV’s driver, a 55-year-old man from Lorain, was not hurt. The crash is under investigation.

A Baltimore County mother says police showed up unannounced and searched her home earlier this month after someone spotted BB guns hanging on the wall of her 11-year-old child’s bedroom as he was taking an online class through his elementary school. Courtney Lancaster, a Navy veteran, told WBFF that her fifth-grade son has learned how to use BB guns in his effort to become an Eagle Scout – and keeps them on his bedroom wall. Lancaster says he has been taking virtual classes ever since Seneca Elementary shut down in March because of the coronavirus – but on June 1, law enforcement paid him a visit. Lancaster added that police told her someone had seen a weapon in her son’s bedroom during a Google Meet class he was taking on his laptop. The station, citing emails Lancaster later exchanged with a school official, reports that a screenshot taken during her son’s class eventually made its way to the school’s safety officer, who in turn alerted police.

FORT RIPLEY TOWNSHIP, Minnesota -- A state trooper was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash in central Minnesota. The collision involving the squad vehicle and a pickup truck occurred about 7:10 a.m. at the intersection of Hwy. 371 and Crow Wing County Road 2 in Fort Ripley Township, the patrol said. Trooper Gregg Gerhartz, 54, of Baxter Township, was removed from his squad and taken by air ambulance to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he was being treated for serious but noncritical injuries, according to the patrol. The pickup driver, 38-year-old Jeffrey Fink, of nearby Little Falls, was injured by did not require treatment at a hospital.

America has now deployed its first female stealth fighter pilot into combat, the Air Force announced. Capt. Emily Thompson, call sign “Banzai,” made headlines after she became the first female to fly the F-35A Lightning II into combat. On June 9, the Air Force released a statement announcing that Thompson had deployed but did not specify when or where. The statement also noted that Thompson had an all-female maintenance crew to launch her historic flight. Although she initially wanted to be an engineer, once she got the chance to fly a plane instead of just repair it, she changed course. She trained on F-16 Fighting Falcons during her college training, then flew F-16s for a year and a half before transferring to the F-35A model. Thompson acknowledged that other women had preceded her in other sorties and planes, but she was honored to be the first in the stealth fighter.

A manhunt was underway in Mississippi on Friday night after a suspect in custody fatally shot a Simpson County sheriff’s deputy after grabbing the deputy’s gun. The deputy was struck Friday afternoon as the suspect was being placed in a patrol car outside a mental health center in Mendenhall, southeast of Jackson. The deputy was identified as James Blair, 77, WLBT-TV of Jackson reported. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he later died, the Clarion Ledger of Jackson reported. Authorities said the suspect, identified as Joaquin Steven Blackwell, 22, was considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen with no shirt and wearing only white boxer shorts. Blackwell had been brought to the mental health center because family members had raised concerns about his mental health, the station reported. It was unclear how long or why Blackwell had been detained.
